Starting mid-year in Beyond

Starting mid-year in Beyond

We're making the big switch from ADV and I'm wondering if I can start from the time period where we left off? Since we just learned about the vikings through the pilgrims, I was hoping to start around lessons 10-13 (or some where around there.) Ideally I would love to finish American History this year.

Could this work? We're using our own LA & math, so no concerns there - we would be using the readers though.
Any advice would be helpful :)

DD 6 - 1st, DS 4 - pre-k and speech therapy for apraxia, DD 2 - sassy toddler ;)
We will be finishing out current year with BLH (using separate LA & Math.)

Well I'm not sure how well it would work but I can tell you that we are on Unit 14 and still talking about Plymouth. I don't see why you couldn't if you already covered the before time.

Hi there! We did Beyond... last year and are doing Bigger... this year. I think that you could do this - of course I'm a bit sad for you that you'll be missing all the great stuff in the first half of Beyond...! I can see why you'd want to do this to keep the history chronological. On the flip side, Bigger... does a brief review of the first part of American history since it does all of it from about the 1500's to 1970, and I will say we really loved revisiting some of those heroes we already learned some about in Beyond... If you think you'd feel that way about it, then you could just do all of Beyond...

What do the rest of you ladies think?

Hi, welcome to the boards. How far did you get in Adv? We only went through Week 11 or 12, then quit and did FIAR and other stuff for the rest of last year. This year we are doing Beyond from the beginning and leaving room for rabbit trails and slow weeks when we want. My kids like reviewing stuff they've already done. All this to say, I don't know what you should do. :D

Carrie should have good advice for you, she usually does, as do the other women here.

Krys, welcome to the boards! We're glad you're here! :D

Since "Beyond..." covers only early American history through the Civil War, you won't get to finish American history with "Beyond...".

Have you already read much of "Stories of the Pilgrims" in MFW Adventures?

You may have to wait until you get the "Beyond..." guide and see how much overlap there is in what you have already read in Adventures. Our program has a very different feel from Adventures, so you could easily start at the beginning of "Beyond..." if that seems simpler. If you do start in the middle, it would probably work too, since you're using your own language arts and math. So, it's really a judgement call about what feels best for your little honeys. :wink:

Thanks for all helpful info too. I think I misspoke about the timeline! I meant to say I wanted to finish Beyond (hopefully) before this year, just so I could start Bigger next year. This is my Olive desire to finish exactly at the end of the year :wink:

It's nice to know that it would work if I started in the middle. But now you all have me wondering about starting at the beginning :wink: I really don't want to miss out on the whole program, especially the Lobel books we love so much! I was just trying to keep up to date and not repeat topics - which I really don't think my kids would mind, they would actually love it!

Okay, I can't wait until we get the guide!

We are trying out Beyound are started around midway. We just read The Drinking Guord (sp) and did work around there. I am not sure what Unit it was since my books are now all packed up. (yeah a month off school books) We haven't really followed order, just what interests us and we are doing Civil War or was until I packed up the books and took everything back to the library. I am not worried about missing the first half because the books will be read when my younger child does the Beyound.
