Replacement for Rod & Staff Workbooks in LHFHG?

Post by Jeanette » Thu May 21, 2009 9:17 pm

I'm going to be starting LHFHG soon with my five year old but I need to find a replacement for the Rod & Staff workbooks - Do it Carefully and Finding Answer's as I already did these workbooks with her for preschool last year. I would love to find something similar. Can someone recommend a fun workbook alternative?

Jeanette,

Hi! :D I don't think I've welcomed you (but I haven't had time to be on the board much lately...), so welcome!

I think that I'd just do the Thinking Skills book that HOD reccomends if you've already done the R&S ones. I'm going to be doing LHFHG this coming year, too. Allison and I are so excited to get new books and dive in in August! :D We have had wonderful experiences so far with HOD in our family.

Hi Kathleen, Thanks for the welcome!
I was looking into the Thinking Skills book but I was going to be schooling another child who will be five soon and I think that the Thinking Skills may be a little too difficult for him. Since he is my daughters best friend I know they would want to be doing the same workbook together :D . I still may consider it though if I don't find another replacemnt.

The publisher of the Thinking Skills 1 has a Thinking Skills K. It is put out by Master Skills and you can google Master Skills Thinking Skills K and find it easily.

Thanks Wigglesmom! I will check it out. Has anyone here used the Thinking Skills K?

I LOVE the Queen Language Lessons workbooks. My daughter is really enjoying hers with LHFHG. This covers both the workbook/thinking skills and phonics boxes for us. There are three choices at this level. My daughter is doing the first book, Language Lessons for Little Ones.

We also worked through the R/S A-E books. Did you know they have a G book, Going on Eagerly? We added that in place of the D book( G has same amount of pages and follows right along with the LHFHG guide). R/S is also going to continue with an H and I book as well. Hopefully by the time we are finished with G, H will be available and we can substitute F with that. Hope this helps you.

Thanks everyone for your replies! After more research I decided to get the "Going on Eagerly" workbook by R&S to AND the Thinking Skills (1st grade). I figured since the Going on Eagerly book is less than $3.00 it couldn't hurt. :) I'm really excited to start this program! We'll be starting toward the end of June after our vacation.
