Which "Thinking Skills" book in Little Hearts?

Post by threegreatkids » Tue May 19, 2009 8:46 pm

I must place my order for Little Hearts soon, since my son just gazes longingly at the box of Bigger materials in our den and asks, "Mom, do you have any idea when my box will come?"
Shopping cart is loaded, but I don't know for sure how to tell which Thinking Skills book to get...Rod and Staff K or Grade 1. I'm assuming Grade 1, since he already turned 6 and is finishing MFW K. But if it is based on writing ability he still seems very much like K.
Also I want to order the earlybird Singapore books, though he might fly ahead a bit and start 1A midyear. So for the Basic Package it looks like we will get the K Science book. Will that be too little for a boy who really enjoys science? (He'll probably choose to listen in on some older science with his sisters, too.)
Thanks!

Hi!,
My little boy is 6 too and we are doing LHFHG right now. Afterschooling until May 28, then full time schooling once ps is out. I chose the Singapore Earlybird 2a and 2b also. We are flying through some of it, but some of it we have slowed down and really benefited from the hands on activities. I am glad that we started it from the beginning b/c it really has helped him to see the why's of certain things that he wasn't grasping before. I've looked ahead and think we will go through 2a quick and slow down a lot once we get to 2b. I'm pretty sure we will make it to 1A before LHFHG is over for us but that is ok by me.
My son will have went through a year of public school K and I also had a tough time deciding which items to purchase 1st or k. So far the R&S that we have done hasn't really required handwriting. It has been cut and paste, mazes, matching, what doesn't belong, what is the same...that sort of thing. I enjoy the R&S books and my son loves the mazes so I am glad we went with them. I don't know what the 1st grade skills book is like so I can't give you a comparison...sorry. We are also doing the A Reason for Handwriting K (we have horrible handwriting-I think it is a boy thing).
The k science is a great book. We used it last year when doing CLP by itself. I almost wish I hadn't gotten rid of my copy so that we could go back through it with Carrie's ideas and fun hands on activities. We are using the 1st grade one this go round and it is still enjoyable. I've thought about getting another copy of the K just to see how it would be doing it with LHFHG then my hubby gives me that look like why would you need 2 science books. :D
Hope some of this helps with your decision making,
Val

We do both the Rod & Staff K and the 1st grade option. You only do one page from each book at a time so it's easy to do both options if you want.
