Math Question

Post by mom2boys030507 » Mon Feb 11, 2008 3:35 pm

We are using LHFHG and using Singapore Earlybird. We are in book 2B. The next lesson starts to teach subtraction. So I am concerned, my ds gets how to add but is no where near having his facts memorized. Is this something that comes in later books and this is just an intro or do I need to take a break from the lessons and keep working on his facts.

Thanks for your help.

It is my understanding that this is just an intro to the concepts. Then in the primary level you work on drilling facts. In Singapore, this is done orally in the classroom so drill will be something you would need to add yourself unless Carrie has that in her plans.

no drill here...

We're in Singapore 2A, starting 2B next week. We don't drill the math facts. My son does his math a bit more slowly because he has to figure it out each time but he gets it and can figure it out in his head.

We choose not to drill the facts but it would certainly be easy to add that if we wanted.

Hi! We're using LHFHG for the second time around now with Singapore Earlybird.

I wouldn't worry about this. This is just an introduction to it. HOD's curriculums have hands-on activities to teach computation. We did add in flashcards later - around the time we did Beyond..., I believe. But even then, we did it very low-key at first and kind of just as a reinforcement. I'd just make sure your ds understands the basic concept of each type of computation as they come up in the guide, rather than that he knows his facts yet.

Glad to meet you, Karen!

Thanks for the responses. I thought it was early to know the facts but everything I read about Singapore is mastery. I have not had a chance to look at 1A and 1B that we will be using next year with Beyond. My ds is understanding how to do the computations so that will continue to be my main focus for now.
