My DD2 loves these stories.. today Jimmy the skunk was mentioned and she is wondering are there any Jimmy the skunk books?

There are so many burgess books out there, I don't know if Jimmy Skunk has a book but most characters do. Dover publications sells a lot of them, or you can check your library.

LHFHG jump-started our love for the Burgess Books too, and we have been collecting a bunch of them. They are timeless, funny, and inexpensive too. We used them for some of our DITHOR books too.

I have to share a little story. When I was a young girl and starting to read books on my own my parents had these books in our upstairs bookcase. I don't know where they came from, but I remember reading them over and over. I had forgotten all about them until I saw you gals mention Ready Fox and then this faint memory started to come and then when I saw some of the other posts about the Burgess books I realized these were the books that first ignited my love for reading. I remember one about a Badger that was my favorite. I have no idea what happened to the ones at my parents house, sure wish I had them. As a young adult I had tried to find them but since I had no clue who wrote them or really what the titles were I had no luck. I suppose my 10 year old is too old for them huh? I may just have to buy a set of them for me. I am just glad I now know what those books were.

Actually my 10 year old and my 13 year old still pull these books off of their shelf and read them independently. They've even recorded some on tape! Thornton Burgess books are timeless and enjoyable by a wide range of ages! Burgess actually wrote the stories for a newspaper column, one chapter at a time as a serial. So, even adults enjoyed his nature stories and his humor.

Actually, according to the Thornton Burgess Museum site (http://www.thorntonburgess.org/index.htm), he wrote 172 books! It is a neat site, has a couple downloadable coloring pages for the kids and all sorts of neat info.

We will be taking a field trip to the TBM this summer while visiting my MIL. She lives the next town over so we are so excited! We will also be making a field trip to the Plymouth Plantation and Plymouth Rock while visiting her since that is only about half-hour from her as well (not that it is all that far from us either....about 3 hours).

What a neat thread! I can't wait to check the website mentioned, I only wish I had heard of sooner. OH well, they fun stuff can be some enrichment. Thanks ladies for sharing all this info.
