Skip Preparing?

Hi Carrie,

Okay, I've almost decided on everything but and just looking ahead a little for next year. I'll briefly refresh your memory about my scenrio. I will be putting my oldest (10) and 9 year old in Bigger (doing extension with the older). My 6 yr. old will do Beyond. My 9 yr. old will either do the Beyond or Bigger History portion depending on how it goes. For this year, my oldest will do her own LA, seperate to your program. ( I could use CTC right side, that's where she places however I notice it is quite tied to the content so I didn't want to "ruin" that).

My question then is for next year, I was thinking of possibly skipping Preparing for my oldest and jumping right into CTC because she is ready for it. ( I'm just keeping her back a year to do Am. History).

Would that work?

Shannon

I don't have any advice for you but I'm sure the others will be chiming in soon.

Hi Shannon! I'm so glad to hear what you're thinking about next year, and that sounds like a good plan. So, fast forwarding to the next year - I would normally say not to skip Preparing. In fact having finished it today myself, my heart is cracking just a tad bit thinking that your 10 yo may miss it. BUT, putting my sentimental thoughts apart, I do think that in your situation - which is your dd is ready for it but you've chosen not to do it due to combining and also for the time period of history - you could probably have your dd do CTC the next year. You will know better after having done Bigger Hearts if your oldest dd is ready to leap ahead to CTC, and at that point you'll probably want to double-check the placement chart and the CTC week long plan to see if you think that's still the best bet - but yes, I do think in this unique situation that you could have her do CTC next. I know Carrie will chime in eventually too, and she will probably know best on this - but those are my thoughts at this point. :D

In Christ,
Julie

Thanks Julie,

I guess it's just a matter of using the subjects Carrie has already scheduled (for science and Language arts, and Bible I think) or choosing my own at her grade level for next year again. I know I will probably have a better idea well into next year it that's the way I should go. Looking at the resources for CTC, these are exactly some of the ones I would have picked if I were putting together the "ideal program" so in lots of ways it looks as if I should choose that program for her next year. They also integrate so well with the history theme that I'd hate to split them up from the left hand side. Although I could sure see her doing the left side of Preparing w/extensions, just as easily. The other factor is that she will technically be in grade 7 at that point and probably should be doing CTC by then? We have done SOTW (not this year but the last two years) and did books 1 and 2 so she did have that overview of history up to that point. (This year we did Canadian history because we are Canadian:) Of course that overview was not integrated as nicely with the Biblical view as HOD seems to try and do!

Thanks,
Shannon
