New to HOD and have questions

I am planning on using HOD this next year, but I have a placement question. I have 2 children, dd-6 and finishing K this year and ds-4 and starting preschool this next year. I would like to use one program for both. I would mainly be teaching my dd and having ds listen in. According to your placement chart Beyond would be the best fit, but I am wondering if I should do Little Hearts because of my ds. I was considering using the first grade material from CLP this next year before I stumbled upon HOD. I don't want to push my dd to much ahead, but I also don't want to hold her back. She has been doing Go Phonics (which I will continue) and Horizons Math this year. I would love to hear your reccomendations.

You could do LHFHG for both dc and combine them for the left side of the plans and storytime and go with the LA (spelling and emerging reading) and Math from Beyond. To get the most out of the program you would buy the Beyond manual for the lesson plans for learning the basics and also the emerging reader set and the appropiate math. If you are considering switching to Singapore for math then you would also want to use a placement test for that also. God Bless.

Hi Kelly, and welcome to the HOD board!

I think you are going to love using HOD next year, and your dc probably are close enough in age to combine nicely. Could you please share a bit about your dc's reading, writing, and math (using the placement chart descriptions as a guide)? Also, could you please share how well they listen to read-alouds, with and without pictures? Thanks! I think LHFHG will probably be the best fit for the left side of the plans with the 2 of them, but it's the right side of the plans I'm wondering about.
In Christ,
Julie

My dd is reading beginning reading books ok, she can do some 2 digit addition/subtraction and her writing is good, she loves copywork (has been doing it since she was 3). They both love to be read too, we are currently reading Black Beauty- no pictures. I plan on continuing with her Go Phonics program witch covers all her LA and Phonics and I will be using Scott Foresman First Grade Math. I already have some preschool workbooks for ds. I figure he will just sit in what he can. I am mainly concerned with teaching dd. Here is breakdown of where she places: Age - Math is Beyond, Bible - Poetry & Rhymes is Little Hearts. I was thinking due to wanting to combine and just starting that Little Hearts would be the best choice. I hope this is the information that you were wanting. Thanks so much for your input. Kelly

HI Kelly! Thanks for telling more about your dd, and she sounds like she is doing great! Now I feel very confident saying Little Hearts will be a nice fit. I think you and your 2 dc would enjoy doing LHFHG together so much.

If you were not doing the LA and math you mentioned for your dd, I would have suggested doing the right side of Beyond for her LA and Math (which is wonderful, IMO

). Just had to throw that out there - if doing the right side of Beyond, she would benefit from doing the spelling, copywork, gentle grammar 1 x a week, beginning oral narrations, hands-on first grade math, emerging reader's set with comprehension questions, and storytime read-alouds that are genre based with studies on the story elements. Whew, that is a lot, isn't it?

However, if you are set with what you've shared for LA and Math and are excited about subbing those in, then that sounds like it would work just fine.

You could do the first grade options for your dd's fine motor skills in LHFHG, and the K options for your ds. HTH! Sounds like you have a great plan coming together!
In Christ,
Julie

Thanks, your comments just reaffirm what I feel is best. I guess I just needed some reassurance from the experienced moms out there. I appreciate this message board so much and I haven't even started with the program yet. I am very excited for this next year. Kelly
