First Day!

Well my ds decided he did not want to finish his old school work and wanted to start HOD today. It went ok. We are smack in the beginning of the learning curve and I hate learning curves. Both ds and dd, who is 3, enjoyed the rhyme in motion God's Creation. We pointed out all of continents on the globe. Not sure how much he enjoyed the history or science though. He has the memory verse memorized already due to the cd. He has listened to it for the past week. We did spelling, math and copywork from Beyond and the rest from Little Hearts. He only got 3 spelling words wrong. Math was easy for him but I knew it would be. I'm not sure if I will continue with the copywork or just have him copy the memory verse since the plan is to do Beyond for everything but math and LA next yr. Hopefully the learning curve will go quickly since I hate them so much.

Hey Sarah. I am glad your first day seems to have gone fairly smoothly. Not sure what you mean by a learning curve with your ds. But if he is struggling with learning concepts it may also take a bit to adjust to a new program as well. Anyway hope the struggles pass quickly. I know today my ds was very confused at what is an adjective and wanted to use adverbs in their place. Whenever something like that happens there is a voice inside me that says "uh oh here comes the struggle" but I just have to remind myself that I am a child that thought "LMNO" was one letter for the longest time and as you can imagine reading did not come early. I survived and so will they.

We use the memory verses from Little Hearts for our copywork, too. We do HWT and my kids have already finished the workbooks for this year, so we just started last week. The kids love doing it and drawing a picture to go with the verse. You could save the copywork part of Beyond for next year.

Hope you get into your groove soon...for your sake and your ds's! We are on week 20 and my kids still ask to do "Leap, leap" (that's what they call it). It's their favorite of all the rhymes!

Oh Sarah,

I also hate learning curves. I will say for whatever reason (so far) I haven't had one with HOD?

Let me ask you this? Are you an Olive Organized? (I'm thinking you are?) Olives thrive on routine, it gives them a sense of security and so the more you do it the more you'll love it

Mary I am very much an Olive. Never knew a left hander could be an Olive. I am also told I tend to be creative but that is after I have figured out the rules. Really good at following directions though.

I am a cautious, enthusiast as well, so if you're anything like me, your first week will be alright but your second will be so much better! I was joking on another thread that I usually have a great third day, rather than a great first day!

Here's hoping your learning curve will only be a small bump!

w2w I am a kindred spirit. I too thought this was one letter for the longest time, which is why I made my first son point to each letter of the alphabet on his placemat when he sang his ABC's, which by the way, Sarah, probably makes me an Olive kindred spirit with you. Although I do still believe Betty is my main girl. Could it be I have a split personality?

Anyway, back to Sarah, I changed my schedule a LOT the first week, and finally found a great way to do our day (which really had nothing to do with the curriculum and everything to do with my lovingly demanding baby!). Hope you find your rhythm - I'm confident you will, HOD just has great programs!
