I just had to share. I have been feeling insecure about math, pretty much since I started in Jan. I don't feel very confident in my own math skills, and dd has already labeled herself as "non mathy". I think much of that stems from the way they teach it in ps, that is to say more of a mastery approach where you can't move on until one thing is mastered, and she was getting frustrated and losing confidence feeling "stuck". Singapore moves on to something more fun, removes the boredom of drill and kill. Well...
As some of you know, at the end of 2A there are 2 reviews, nice and long, and pretty thorough with coverage. I used them to "test" my dd. We have been kind of struggling with math, or should I say with addition and subtraction (she loves mult & div). So I had her take the first review and she only got a 60. I was VERY discouraged, but it seemed like careless mistakes. So this weekend I had her take the second one and reminded her to review her own work, to not turn it in until she was satisfied that it was good work, and she got an 89!!!! Even at that it was simple mistakes in the addition and subtraction. She got every single word problem correct, and every single mult and div problem correct. I can see that she can read those word problems and know how to solve them! We have a silly thing...I like to see how she works out problems so I encourage her to write it out, but when she can do it in her brain she draws me a little pic of a "brain" so I know she did it in her head.
Okay, I am gushing now. I just want to thank Julie and Carrie and many other members here who encouraged me that Singapore does work, and to give it some time. I am so thankful now that we didn't jump ship at the first sign of trouble. I am seeing the fruits and am so thankful! I'm going to keep working math through summer in the hopes of getting done with 2B and will also get some games to help with cementing those facts.
Wish I could have come to the convention in Arlington to hug your necks!!!

Re: Huge PRAISE about math...
That is so great! Math has been a struggle for us too. I was going to pass on Singapore as I tried it on my own last year and just didn't get it. But with the guide and suggested activities I think it looks much more understandable. I have also decided to go ahead with it for next year and this gives me more hope that it will work. Thanks and good for you! Gushing is awesome!

Amy,
I'm SO excited for you! There will be times of struggle in almost all math programs and staying with one really makes a difference in the long haul. This is a lesson I've learned the hard way.
Singapore is one of those programs where you truly see the fruit more and more as you move through the years.
Thanks for sharing your happy moment and know that I am celebrating with you.
Blessings,
Carrie

Here's a hug coming your way, Amy!
That's great to hear - and I'm so proud of your dd, and you too.
I'm so glad you gave it some time, and I think you will just keep seeing the fruit of that. Happy math days are ahead!
In Christ,
Julie
