combine with Cantering the Country

Hi Everyone,
I've just ordered this for my son and want to combine it with Cantering the Country. I was wondering if anyone else had done this. My reasons are two fold. 1. We want to cover the 50 states. 2. My son needed more science that BLHFHS has. It's nothing against the program at all, this child has read 4 science text books in less than a school year. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about implementing it. I was thinking of doing CTC twice a week and doing BLHFHG 5 days a week. Do you think it will be too much? My son is 10 and a voracious (his word of the week lol) reader. I'd appreciate any comments. I also wanted to add I'm so excited about starting this curriculum, I also ordered Little hands to heaven for my 2 year old.
Thanks a bunch.
Kim

Kim,

I'll just pop in to welcome you to the board. I'm a bit confused by your post, as I'm not sure which programs that you're using? As far as the science in Beyond goes, I'm not sure if you're thinking to add science from CTC to Beyond, or if you have a child actually doing CTC? The science in Beyond meets state standards for the target age range on the guide which is ages 6-8. If your son is 10, he is actually beyond the target age range of Beyond, so he would most likely place in Preparing Hearts or CTC. This would obviously up the level of the science.
Blessings,
Carrie

Hi Carrie,
Thanks forthe warm welcome!
My son isn't emotionally ready for a 4th grade program. He can read and sound out the longer words(sometimes) but doesn't understand the meaning of them, so I'd rather start him out a bit lower to build his comprehension skills. He becomes frustrated and calls himself stupid etc. I wish to avoid that this year and build his confidence. We just took him out of public school last year.
We are doing Cantering the Country for geography and the extra science. The science is the tree, bird and flower from the state you are studying,so it's not a lot of science work.We spend about an hour twice a week on it. My son wants to do more hands on science. I want to use both programs, using CTC for the geography and extra science over our 2 year study of U.S. history.I was hoping to find out about how long per day BLHFHS takes, so I can schedule in CTC and Latin.I know this all sounds strange but my son absolutely loves earth science and would love to do nothing but science for school! I hope all that made sense!
Blessings,
Kim

Kim,
Thanks so much for popping back to share a bit about your son. I'll move this post over to the main board, so more moms will see it too.

I didn't get a chance to move it last evening as we're at convention in Texas right now. So, I'll move it now, so other moms can chime in too.
In response to your questions, Beyond Little Hearts takes 2 to 2 and 1/2 hours a day to do. If your son is a science lover, you can easily add additional science to Beyond (which we would recommend anyway to make it be a good fit for his age overall).
However, we would advise leaving the science in CTC for the time when your kiddo gets to actually use the rest of CTC, because the assignments that go along with the science will require a level of writing, notebooking, and lab sheets equal to the skills required to complete the rest of CTC.
We look forward to getting to know you better and are glad that you'll get a chance to use HOD.
Blessings,
Carrie

Hi Kim!
I just wanted to pop in and welcome you to HOD. I don't know anything about Cantering the Country, so I can't help you there. I was just going to ask a quick question to clarify. When you're saying CTC, you're talking about Cantering the Country, right? HOD's newest program is called Creation to Christ, and the abbreviation here on the board is CTC. Carrie was advising you not to use the science from this HOD guide now if you're doing Beyond. I'm thinking you were talking about the science in Cantering the Country though, right?

Hi Kathleen,
I apologize for the confusion. You are right, i did mean the science portion of Cantering the Country, not the latest HOD guide. Thanks for clarifying that.

Hi Carrie,
Thanks for replying again, I know you are busy during convention season! What I'm planning to do is use BLHFHS for our primary lesson work. Then use cantering the country for the 50 states and the study of each state's flower & tree. I plan to spread it over 2 years. It wold be about 30 mins each lesson, twice a week. My husband really wants us to do the 50 states. My son really wants to do the tree and flower study. And I really want to figure out what I'm doing! lol
I'm sorry for the confusion. Now, I'm off to sit with my plan book and make it work.
Thanks so much,
Kim

Kim!
Thanks to Kathleen, you and I are now talking about the same thing!

My tired brain was not thinking that CTC also meant Cantering the Country.

Carrie
