Intro...Bigger vs. Preparing

Post by threegreatkids » Fri May 08, 2009 7:32 am

Hi!
I joined this board a week or so ago to explore the option of the new Ancients program for our family in 2010-2011. Since then, I'm really feeling the Lord leading us to switch to HOD next year. I'd love some help with placement :D
We started with SL and then switched to MFW 2 years ago. I love MFW in so many ways, and the year we did Adventures was perfect, but the large target age range was hard this year in ECC with a 2nd and 3rd grader (low end of the age range) and I didn't fell like we would do well in CtG next year, so I had pieced together a later American History program instead. Then we discovered HOD!
Let me intoduce my kiddos. Oldest, M., just turned 9 and will be 4th grade next year. She does very well in language arts, has recently read such books as Ballet Shoes, Sign of the Beaver, and The Saturdays. She loves to write (though she has a tendency to use a bad pencil grip), can do studied dictation, spells well (she placed in level D of Spelling Power but after 6 weeks never got a pre-test word wrong so we ditched it since it was wasting our time), and is finishing up PLL. Math is sometimes a struggle, and she will finish Singapore 2B by summer.
Middle, L., will turn 8 late summer and be in 3rd grade next year. She, too, loves to read, such books as All-of-A-Kind Family and Boxcar Children. She does not like writing or copywork, but that may be b/c she is often in a program that is above her age. For example in ECC this year she tried doing the bible verse dictation and it had her in tears, so instead we stretched the verse copywork over 2 days and that has been OK. Her spelling is...well, it needs help. We are using Queen's Spelling through Copywork, which is the first thing that has produced any results without frustration. She is in the middle of Singapore 2A for Math. She has not started cursive writing. She has struggled with her overall attitude toward school this year. She is extremely artistic and creative.
Youngest, A., is finishing up MFW K. I'm planning on doing MFW 1st next year with him (middle child thrived in this program but she is very different) so for now I don't need any advice :) . If it doesn't go well, I'll be back with questions about him. The following year we will see where he is and decide whether to fold him into the HOD program that his sisters will be using or give him his own. I'm leaning toward his own, but we'll revisit that issue in a year!
So, at first I thought Preparing for the girls next year, but now I'm leanng toward Bigger with the Extension pack. That way younger dd will have something really on her target level, oldest can fly independently with the extension part, and we can do a bit more American History, which we would love to do. The only downside is that oldest would not finish the entire history cycle before HS, but I'm just remembering the scripture verse about each day having enough worries of it's own!
Thoughts? Thanks!!!!

I would agree that Bigger sounds like a better placement. Your younger d could have a chance to work and grow without being stressed. I think your oldest would be fine in Bigger too. She is defintely in the target age range. If you feel she needs more then she could do the extension package. Since she doesn't need spelling she would do the dictation while younger did the spelling lists.
Blessings,
Michelle

Caroline,

I wanted to pop in here and welcome you. :D Welcome! :D

I'm thinking that your idea to do Bigger with the extensions for your oldest sounds great! We have had a fabulous year with Bigger! :D Great learning and fun memories.

Welcome to the HOD Board, Caroline! :D Thank you for sharing about each of your dc, and I agree with the placement you suggested of BIgger Hearts, with extensions for your older dd.

For your older dd... Bigger Hearts is a full program, and the history'/science extensions will give her just the beefing up she'd enjoy, and I think you'll enjoy the independent schedule she can follow for the extensions using Bigger Hearts appendix. She can use the 3A/3B Math schedule in the Appendix. She can do copywork of the poetry - which are a wonderful collection of poems by classic authors (the daily plans have the poetry lessons in the LA box as well). For grammar, I think R & S 3 would be a very nice fit. She can do dictation - which will be enough for her spelling - but you will have to look at the Bigger Hearts dictation and see if it is the right level for her. You can start in the middle of it if the beginning is too simple for her, or you can always get the Preparing Hearts guide (which has 3 levels of dictation) if you want to have harder levels. To continue challenging her because she is an avid reader, she could do Drawn into the Heart of Reading, Level 4/5 with the Level 4/5 Girl Interest pack. I think she would love this! :D If she hasn't done cursive, you can have her do that as well. We really enjoyed Cheerful Cursive at our house :D , but you can use any cursive program you desire.

For your younger dd... Bigger Hearts will be a great program for her (without the extensions). She can use the 2B math plans in the daily Bigger Hearts math box, and then finish using the 3A plans in the Appendix. She can grow in her writing by slowly copying a bit of the poetry each day. She can begin with less of the poem (maybe a goal of a few stanzas by the end of the week), and then work up to copying the entire poem by the end of the week. She can do the spelling list in the Appendix, along with the wonderful LA spelling activities in the daily plans (those were great for my ds who had speech delays and struggled with spelling at first  ). I think I'd wait to begin Cursive until next year. For DITHOR, she could do Level 2/3, with Book Pack Level 2 or 3 - I think she could do Book Pack 3, but if you would rather have a bit easier books so she focus more on the story element learning, etc. in DITHOR, than Book Pack Level 2 would be great too. She can do R & S 2 for grammar. I'm excited for this artistic and creative dd of yours to delve into the history and science notebooking - I think she especially will enjoy that.

I hope that helps you out! These are just my thoughts, you will know best as these sweeties are your dc! :D

Julie

Michelle, Kathleen and Julie,
Thanks you SO much for your replies! This board (and all of you) have blessed me tremendously as I'm shifting my thinking from my previous plan (pre-HOD  )
How lovely to have confirmation that Bigger w/ Ext is the way to go. Julie, I appreciated your thoughts on the spelling, math, grammar, cursive and reading items as well. I hadn't even thought that far! I may go ahead and order Cheerful Cursive for younger dd with the thought of starting mid-year. Cursive is the only "writing" thing that she's actually excited about!
I do have a couple of questions about DITHOR, but I think I'll start a new thread for that.
Thanks again,

threegreatkids,

I'm late to the thread, but I just wanted to pop-in and fully agree with the placement suggestions that the ladies shared on the thread. I would recommend Bigger Hearts with extensions as well for your two sweet girls. :D

Blessings,
Carrie
