Questions about Beyond LHFHG

Post by simplepamom » Fri May 08, 2009 6:46 am

I am still wavering. I am looking for the best fit for my dd's age going to be 10 first of the school year, and will be 8 half way through next school year. I had made a post and appreciate all the advice and input I have received- as I mentioned I am wishy washy so now my thinking has changed, and most times, I feel that how we present things or how 'we' feel about things affects others advice and opinions-- so now I want to ask some more questions- thanks for being patient with me.

First, am I to be giving the singapore math primary us standard or the primary math 3rd edition us standard placement test?

I was looking at doing Bigger- because I want to combine my 2 dd's. I am now reconsidering and thinking maybe I should start with Beyond instead. I know this level is a bit beneath my oldest, but I am thinking I can supplement my own readers for her- just like the extension pack does for her in Bigger? (like I have the dear america series a few books in that, I have little house books, I have a few short readers on historical figures, I have magic school bus books, I have actual curriculum books....)

My concern is, my youngest gets really sullen, frustrated, down on herself when she can't do something. She can recognize and write manuscript letters, but I don't know what I would say she has 'mastered' them (she still does not do proper spacing most of the time, still occassionally has a revershal in writing a number or letter occassionally) While she writes letters to penpals, and she gives me a very hard time about writing a sentence on or history record book (she has a choice of drawing a picture or writing a sentence- she complains when I say write something). WHen she has to write something to turn in to the teacher - she pouts and whines-- I am not sure she IS ready for a harder writing assignment. (she especially has problems in spelling and says, but I can't write I don't know how to spell...) I am wondering if it isn't better to start at the lower level and build up to give her more confidence?

So far for math I am pretty sure that my youngest tests into 1B, and my oldest into 2B.

Neither has had any American history really.

My oldest also really really complains about writing assignments. I do not feel her writing to a prompt or her other writing assignments this year were really up to speed- and I Don't feel she had adequate building up to get to the point of writing these either. I am not sure it isn't a bad idea for her to have that basic writing also..... (she would have her own grammar though and math, and additional reading- which I understand I Would have to come up with?)

Do you think this would work?? What thoughts do you have? Do you think a 10 yr old would be bored with Beyond little hearts?

Brenda,

In order to place your kiddos best, you'll need to start with the placement chart and share with us where your kiddos place individually on the first page of the chart (all combining scenarios aside). Here's the link to the chart: http://www.heartofdakota.com/placing-your-child.php

After we have a better idea about where each child truly places, we can help you so much better! :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Brenda,

I was looking back at your previous posts to try to remember what was said. Since it doesn't look like you'd had a chance to respond to that past thread, I wanted to link it here:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3688&p=27297#p27297

From what you've shared about your dc in this post, maybe you'd be happier placing them together for the left side of Bigger Hearts, and doing the right side of Bigger Hearts with your older, and the right side of Beyond with your younger? I'll check back after you've had a chance to read the other post too. :D

In Christ,
Julie
