Language arts when combining

I am thinking of having my 2 dd's start off with Bigger (though I waver about starting with Beyond- my oldest is 9 going to be 10, and i am afraid she would be bored, but I am not sure a review on some parts wouldn't be good, and we haven't covered any American History yet...)

My question is, whichever program I use, will I need to get the Appropriate Rod and Staff book for my older dd's age? I mean my younger dd would be working with what corresponds to the unit we are using, but should I substitute and give my older dd the book that is on her grade level?

I'm certainly no expert, since I won't be starting HOD until next school year, but that is what I am going to do. We will be doing Bigger Hearts with a 3rd and 6th grader. The 3rd grader will be doing LA as scheduled in the guide, but the 6th grader will be doing R&S English at her own level. I am also adding in a writing program for her one or two days a week, and I understand that I will need to find dictation passages for her since the ones in Bigger won't be at her level.

You are right. Whenver you combine you also have to do math and language arts at the appropriate level for both kids. HTH!
