Beyond Little Hearts....newbie with questions

Post by across22002 » Thu Apr 30, 2009 8:23 pm

Hi!!
I am planning on buy BLHFHG for next school year for my son who is just beginning to read. I am confused about what I will need. I know I need the economy package and perhaps even the Basic package. However, I am confused about the readers. Since he is an emerging reader should I get the books listed there? Are they scheduled in to the BLHFHG book? I am not sure if these are just extra books to be read or if they are actually part of the curriculum.

I hope this makes sense!! I am super tired tonight!!

Thank you in advance.

Lisa

If your son is an emerging reader, you'll need to buy or borrow from the library all the books listed for the emerging reader set. They are scheduled in the appendix along with questions to prepare them for better narration and improve comprehension. My dd was already reading when we found HOD, but I am so looking forward to using them with the next 3!

This year we are doing LHFHG, however, once my oldest DS finished with phonics I went ahead and bought the emerging readers and the Beyond manual. For now we are working out of both for that purpose. Next year my oldest DS will be finished with readers and doing DITHOR while doing Beyond and my youngest will be doing BEyond too and ready for the readers.

Hope that helps!

Lisa,

The ladies are doing a great job of helping you! :D If your son has completed or has almost completed phonics and is an emerging reader, then you would need the books listed in the Emerging Reader Set. These books are scheduled daily in the Appendix of Beyond with reading assignments for the child to read out loud to you to each day and 3 questions or a narration prompt to check comprehension.

The books are sequenced in an order that gradually raises your child's reading level until the year-long schedule finshes with the child reading small chapter books. :D Once your child has completed the Emerging Readers schedule, he will move onto Drawn into the Heart of Reading the following year.

Blessings,
Carrie

Hi Lisa! Welcome to the HOD Board! :D We are doing Beyond now, and I bet you will enjoy it as much as we are. To make ordering easy, you will want to click on the light bulb at the top of this link:

Your son sounds like he's at the same level as mine when we began BLHFHG. This is what we ordered:
Economy Package
Emerging Reader's Set
Basic Package with Math 1A/1B
Deluxe Package: Boy Interest Set

If your ds is ready for second grade math, then you'd want to get the Basic Package with Math 2A/2B, but a typical first grader would do Math 1A/1B. For the Deluxe Package, you just pick 1 of the 3 options. We picked the Boy Interest, but you could also pick the Classic Set too. HTH!

In Christ,
Julie
