Adding Science with a 6th Grader

OK - here's another one for y'all. In the past, Carrie has answered my questions about beefing up Science for my 6th grader doing Preparing next year. She suggested adding in an Apologia Elementary science book for the 5th day. I'm pretty sure we are going to be doing that. Has anyone else done that and, if so, did you just read the text throughout the year - or did you do the notebooking, experiments, etc.? In looking over the book, it seems like we will only have time to do the reading if we just do the book one day a week - that books covers a lot of stuff! Just figuring out how to make the book the most productive for her. I'd love your suggestions!

I am interested in many of your questions Tiffini, just because we will be in the same boat possibly next year with a 6th grader in Preparing. (By the way my dd will turn 12 in Sept. I saw that yours will be 12 in the fall also.) I was also wondering about this as well. I did not know if Preparing Science as written with the extensions would be enough. I, too had remembered Carrie recommending our family to use Apologia to beef up the science but I cannot remember if she was just saying that in regards to our consideration of using Bigger in the fall or in regards to us using Preparing. (Back then, we were bouncing back and forth between the two.) Thanks for asking this question.

Tiffini,

I agree that it would be good to only add the readings from the Apologia text on the 5th day of each week. This is because you'll only be using it to extend the reading level of the material a bit for your daughter in the area of science. :D

There's no need to add any more notebooking, written work, or experiments to those already scheduled within Preparing Hearts. So, just have your daughter read and enjoy the Apologia text. If you desire, she could orally narrate on it, but I wouldn't require any written work.

Enjoy!

Blessings,
Carrie

Thanks for confirming that for me. We borrowed the books from a friend and none of my kids can put them down. They are so fascinating! My dd is having a hard time picking which one she wants to use for next year. And CBD has a great sale on them right now as well, so I'm buying a couple and they're going to read through one for the summer since they just can't wait. :D
