re: dictation/copy work in HOD

Hi! Well, I'm new to this and I have a rather silly question. My son is really bad about spelling and I have been searching for a good spelling program for him and a post gave a link referring to HOD's dictation/copywork for spelling,a no tests method and it seems good to me!

However, my ds is now 9 and I will be getting Preparing... for him. Do they still do that dictation/copywork in Preparing...? Seems like a good enough method to teach spelling, but how do I jump into that type when he's never had it before and is already finishing 3rd grade? How would I go back to teaching him with that method for words he should already know, but doesn't?

Interested in this kind of spelling, but clueless as to how it works. Thanks in advance for any help!

I know what it feels like to be new to this method of teaching spelling - I remember how that felt. I can stand up and say with all sincerity now though that IT WORKS! My poor ds had speech therapy for several years, and you can imagine how a speech problem would effect spelling proficiency. Anyway, YES, PHFHG has both copywork (in the form of copywork for notebooking) and dictation, and they work beautifully. Just follow the clear and oh-so-easy "special instructions for dictation passages" in the Appendix of the PHFHG guide, Level 2, and you'll be set. I would start with Level 2, and that will give your ds a great foundation to build upon. Don't worry about doing spelling lists - just do the plan in PHFHG, and sit back and watch your ds grow. It is a slow burn though - give it a good year, and you will see results that you would not have seen with the lists methods. As a former Spelling Power user, R & S Spelling user, and countless other ps spelling curriculums, let me encourage you - HOD's method is the way to go!
