Going to order books from library for Folktale section for Bigger [THE LAST ONE! YEAR IS ALMOST OVER!]
We just finished enjoying Sid Fleischman's By the Great Horn Spoon, so I am thinking it might be nice to read The Whipping Boy, except I am a bit nervous.

Anyone with sort of gentle, sheltered :P boys who have read this?
[I have never had a problem with any of the book selections, but this one sounds like it might be a little bit harsh. Mind you we have read The Horse and His Boy by C.S. Lewis and they he handled that well.]

We read The Whipping Boy this year, and if your dc could handle The Horse and His Boy, they'll be fine with The Whipping Boy. It is really only at the beginning that the boy must take a "whipping" for the bratty prince (author's words here :D ). It is not long into the story that the industrious whipping boy is paired with the bratty prince in a daring escape that is full of adventure and character building moments as the 2 of them come to understand they are not so different after all. A wonderful read!

In Christ,
Julie

We read it this year, also. It is very short. You could pre-read it to see if it's a good fit for your children. I pre-read it in one night after the children had gone to bed. If you like it, you may want to look for the movie. We watched it on Netflix. The whole family enjoyed it very much.
