another unsolicited book review... ;)

I will often request all of the books Carrie suggests from the library and let my son hold them, flip through them, etc., before he decides which one we will read for story time.

I recently got out, "Homer Price," "By the Great Horn Spoon," and "The Saturdays."
He quickly selected "Homer Price." Fine. But I really thought "By the Great Horn Spoon," looked good, too. So on a whim, as my husband was leaving for a work trip, I asked him to listen to it on CD [I'd ordered both from the library] on his trip. He gave it two thumbs up, so I began to play it in the car whenever we went out. We just finished it today; it took almost 2 weeks.

It was FANTASTIC. Even my 4 year old daughter tried to keep up.

If you passed it by, or are coming up to it but select something else, I suggest you consider it for a road trip, or a fun-time story for your kids at another date! It was very enjoyable.

Thanks, Carrie! I am sure we would have never, ever been exposed to that book on our own.

You're talking about By The Great Horn Spoon, right? I'm actually heading over to the couch right now to read the last chapter of it. (I missed it on Friday when I went to the Kansas City conference, and I have to know how it ends!) :D I agree, it was a great book! We've loved all of Praiseworthy and Jack's adventures!

Did you love it, Kathleen?
Seeing my oldest son's face in the rear view mirror was so worth it!
I was so tickled.

Stacy,

I did!! :D We loved it when Good Luck got stuck in the porthole. Grant was literally rolling on the floor laughing that day!

And...we learned a lot about the gold rush, too.

Another 2 thumbs up from our house!

I'm so glad you ladies loved this one! My older son read it first, and then we all listened to it on audio during our lunches last summer. The boys at our house couldn't get enough of it! :D It is a swashbuckling tale full of adventure and humor.

Thanks for sharing! :D

Blessings,
Carrie

We loved that book too! The book choices HOD has are top notch. I feel such a sense of peace about that and am happy to relinquish some of the duties of choosing books wisely. Walking into homeschool conventions or large libraries can be overwhelming sometimes - just the sheer number of books (and usually lack of time and funds on my part) can make my blood pressure shoot through the roof. I cover all of the HOD book choices from the Book Shop in some way, shape, or form - and it makes for a very satisfying reading experience. Thanks for your hard work and attention to detail when picking books, Carrie - it is greatly appreciated!

In Christ,
Julie
