I am combining LHFHG with my twin boys that will be in K and daughter that will be in 1st.

My daughter just turned 6 and is reading (so are my boy's). We will continue phonics instruction but I'm wondering if I should be adding something from BEYOND such as spelling & the readers for her??? If we don't start BEYOND until she is a 2nd grader and my boy's are 1st, then how will she be doing the R&S 2nd grade english?

I am in a similar situation, though with a son who will be ready for 1st grade and I plan to use LHFHG with some Beyond options. I am going to paste an email I received from Carrie...this might help you some.

I agree that LHFHG would be the best overall fit for your little guy, even though he is advanced in phonics and math. LHFHG has a rich overview of history and does a good job of setting kiddos up for success in our future programs. I think the selections you've made to go along with LHFHG will be good as well.

As far as phonics go, you have several choices. You can either finish with Saxon phonics, or use one of the two phonics programs we carry (I would lean toward The Reading Lesson as it's easier to move more quickly through what your son already knows or even start in the middle if needed), or use Explode the Code workbooks to finish out your phonics instruction. From what you're describing, it sounds as if your son will be finished with phonics in the next 3-4 months or so. At that point, he'll be ready to begin the Emerging Reader's Set.

In order to use the Emerging Reader's Set, you'll need the Beyond Little Hearts Teacher's Guide. If money allows now, I would recommend getting the Beyond Little Hearts guide to also follow the schedule for the hands-on activities and lessons that go with math 1A/1B which your son will also be using. Then, when he's ready for the Emerging Reader's Set, you'll already have the Beyond guide on hand and can just begin following the daily schedule for that in the Appendix. At that point you may also wish to begin the spelling list 1 activities included in Beyond as well.

Using the Beyond guide in this way will not change your ability to use the Beyond guide the following year, as there is a second set of spelling words you could do at that point, there is also math plans for 2A/2B in the Appendix, and your son would just move onto to Drawn into the Heart of Reading as a second grader (whenever he finished the Emerging Reader's Set).

Thanks! I was trying to remember without going back and actually looking. I went back and edited my original post which did not make any sense at all.

I believe Carrie suggest starting your child on R&S2 in 3rd grade because R&S grammar is above grade level, so your dd should be right on target, grade wise. My son will be in 3rd when he starts Bigger and R&S 2. HTH's.

I have not tried to use muliple children in the same curriculum, HOWEVER, I have used the curriculum with my sons who do not match up exactly with what is suggested in language/math/reading boxes.
I use the rest of the boxes as they are, and make whatever adjustments are needed in those areas which to seem to require being "right-on-the-mark" ability wise. There is a lot more leeway on history, than there is for phonics, for example.

You might just add the right side of Beyond for your dd if she seems ready for it. That may actually be the easiest way to meet your dd's needs if you are thinking of beefing up those areas in LHFHG anyway. If you did this, you'd be able to use Beyond's Emerging Reader's Set and questions in its Appendix, Spelling List 1, gentle Grammar lessons on Day 5 of each LA box plans, and the hands-on math activities and schedule for Singapore Math 1A/1B. I don't think I'd do the Storytime box, since you'll be doing LHFHG's Storytime already. Also, I think I'd wait on the copywork of the poem since that will go better with the actual study of the poem as its linked to the Beyond history the next year. As Carrie's email said, this won't effect your ability to use Beyond the next year.
