I realy like LHTH, I am using it with my almost 5yr and my almost 3yr is tagging along . We are in lesson 25 so we are getting close to the end. With that said in addition to LHTH we have been doing what we call our morning activity book which is folder with: calander, seasons chart, bible memory passage, weather, letter review and number review(this was because I was trying to let ds learn numbers past 10 since). Is it overkill. Ds has been having a really hard time getting interested in anything school related for the last few weeks.Should we just stop the extra?

Edited: because ds is almost 5yr not almost 4yr

rni's mommy,

I know many ladies will be along to offer their wisdom, but I'll tell you that for my first few years as a teacher, I did exactly what you're describing. And yes, it is overkill. I can say that now, but back then I felt I needed all of those extras too.

I had to get to the point where you are now and realize that it was stealing my kiddo's joy in schooling (and mine too if I was honest). :D The activities in LHTH and eventually in LHFHG will cover all of those areas for you, so there's no need to worry that your bases aren't covered.

So, if you're able to let go of the extras, I would encourage you wholeheartedly to do so. It will bring new life to LHTH and more joy back to your homeschool journey. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

That's what I kinda thought. I think it is the ex preschool teacher in me. I taught preschool for several years and that was one of the normal things in our day (circle time). I think I need to just stop and let us enjoy LHTH because ds really did love it in the beginning before I messed with it :( It is not like he will never learn what day it is or what the weather is like if we don't sit down and do it on a chart. Thanks for reassuring me that we won't miss anything.

I can say I've been in the same boat. I just keep telling myself when they turn 18 they'll know their colors and days of the week and be potty trained and on and on...AND SO MUCH MORE PTL!! I read your last post and it said you used to be a preschool teacher...I'm sure you did a great job with that as well...the difference is (I think) you're kids are learning even more than your students did because between the 2 of them they have all of your love and attention...something you weren't able to give your students...there were probably too many. With fewer distractions and the love of a mommy teaching our kids have to learning sooooooo much more!!

You're doing a great job!!

I don't know if this helps or not...but when we switched to HOD last fall...my dh and I really sat down and talked about what we wanted our hs to look like, what we wanted our children to get out of it....and after reading some posts/blogs from the ladies here...and I think specifically mamamary (but now I can't say for certain)....we really knew that what we were looking for was "making memories for and with our children." So after a few months of "doing more and extras" we settled back down and just do HOD as its written....and since that time...I have had THE BEST TIME hsing my children....I have grown to know them individually as they express themselves and talk about things...they are EXCITED to do school ever day (okay except math sometimes  ) But all HOD things....we are just having the best time! My oldest dd came to me a few weeks ago and explained to me that her greatest time of the day is when we all cuddle up on the couch and read together...THOSE are the memories she's making and what a gift they are....so I say...go with HOD...don't add to it...and it will actually add to you!!!

I'm another one who used to add, add, add - and I have stopped and am so much happier with the results (mainly, happy and enthused dc and less stressed me :D )! I agree with stopping the extra and letting the beauty of the HOD guides balance shine through. We want to stop as our dc are begging for more - so that they are still excited about what they are doing. I've found out the hard way, that's a good thing!

When my dd was just turning 3 we did LHTH for a little while. I too tried to add to it. I actually burned out before she did! HOD is magically simple, and it is truely all that is needed by itself. :D
