Let's tell a snapshot of the favorite HOD act. we did today

Hey gals! I was thinking this would be so fun to do. There's always at least one activity we did each day I'm dying to tell my husband about at supper (unless the children beat me to it!). I was thinking it would be great to do that here too! It's like a little window into each other's day, and it also gives a tiny snapshot of what a different HOD program than you're using will be like! I'll share at the end of the day! Gotta get started...

Well, we did not do HOD today- my son is sick and went to the doctor. However, when we did our spelling practice yesterday with my daughter she had to use 3 different colored pencils to write over her misspelled words. She said, "Oh I love this, it's my favorite part!" So, she really enjoys the spelling program, and is making wonderful progress. For us this is a big deal because she's been the child who struggled to learn to read. We're so proud of her!

Another thing she's loving is using the Emergent reader list. We spent double the time using our children's bible for reading aloud, so we just started with Owl At Home last week. She thinks the stories are so funny and really looks forward to her read aloud time each day. And she remembers what happened so can answer the questions at the end. Thanks Carrie for sharing this program with us! I am chomping at the bit to order Bigger for next year, but I have to wait until later in the Spring. I know our "box" day will be a huge event around here!

My dd really enjoyed the science today in Unit 19 of LHFHG with the salt and the sugar. She learned that even though things look the same they may be different and that sin may seem sweet at first but it leaves you feeling bitter. It was a great lesson and a lot of fun for her.

InHistTiming - my son loved the 3 crayon thing back when we did that too, and Gina, I remember that science one being fun too! I'm so glad you shared!

Today for LHFHG, ds's favorite activity was filling glasses with different amounts of water and dinging them with a spoon to make high and low notes. Even our baby was smiling at that "music"! My son loved this and continued it for quite a while.

For Bigger..., we made a huge masking tape outline on the carpet of the U.S. after reading a great narration in Eggleston about Lewis and Clark. Then, we taped the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers onto our map and labeled them and the direction they flow. I have to also say I loved the Bible Study today on friendship. DS said his best friends were his brothers because quote "they're just such a part of me, and I'm just such a part of them, like my leg or something - that much a part of me, Mom!" O.k. I know the "leg" comment isn't very poetic or anything, but it sure touched my heart!

For DITHOR... we finished Folk Tales and ds picked to re-enact his favorite part of the book for his project. He made a big black yarn mustache for himself to be "Mr. Conley", which we had a big laugh about when he tried it on. The sweet thing was he made a rooster tail and "hat", and a turtle shell for baby brother to wear during the re-enactment, so he "wouldn't feel left out". He's only 10 mos. old, and the turtle and the rooster parts are really just in the scenery, but it sure will be a hoot to see him toddling around in it when we do the re-enactment!

Oh Mary, I feel your "joy" and hear your "pain"! My oldest sang Holy, Holy, Holy that way at church last week, and it was a happy but also a tad bit embarrassing moment for me. He's loud and very heartfelt, and I love that - perhaps better tone will come!

Gina...I can't get your blog to come up...

I wanted to see it. We're in the exact same place and this was supposed to be our lesson today...however, I have some sort of stomach thingy and could not function enough to get in any "school". They did spend some time out in the snow (PE) and we watched Little House...does that count as history??

This is a great idea Julie. I really enjoy hearing about the fun stuff! Your stories have made me smile today and I have not been very smiley today

. Do this again tomorrow...maybe I'll feel better and we'll actually have school.

Melanie - I am so sorry you are not feeling well. Hope you feel better tomorrow! I'll repost this for another go-round. It is fun to hear everybody else's favorite moments! I'll say a prayer dc do not get what you have too. That is always the worry too this time of year! You could say the opposite prayer for me... that I don't get whatever my baby has, and that he gets better - he threw up today too. Lucky I don't have a queasy stomach, my hubbie wouldn't have handled that well...

I got it to come up now, Gina, and your children are so cute! I loved the picture of them trying the salt and sugar. That is quite a surprise when you think you are going to taste something sweet and it's not! I've done that at a restaurant when I thought I was having a drink of my pop and I grabbed a lemon water. Strange taste! I really liked your blog, although you've got me dreaming of helicopter rides in Maui now! It's freezing here today, with snow everywhere. Maui... take me away!

Oooohhh! We did not do school either. My dd got a cast on her foot today. Not broken it actually is to stretch her foot and calve we are on cast three.

But we did have kind of a profound conversation today. So as not to be left out I will share

and since I already did the map story....

It seems my daughter was told by a little girl who she calls her "best friend" besides her sister, that the little girls father feels we are not Christian enough for his kids. Don't want to give too many details but the bottom line is my daughter said that "nobody is a good enough Christian and that is the point." We were able to relate it to the Proverbs they are studying that she rightly saw that the little girl's father is resting on his own understanding for his daughter instead of trusting God to be the source of understanding. She said that if he keeps her separate from the world physically he is not going to be able to keep the world out of her heart and soon she will rebel. I was proud of her she could see the real source of the issue instead of taking it personally. And have kindness and understanding for her child. I was also really happy she linked it to a Proverb because that translation of scripture to the world is the beginning of true understanding. So needless to say copywork of those verses will continue.

And as a joke my dh says let's go outside and sing some hymns, not knowing that we do...the kids burst out in "Holy, Holy, Holy"

First of all, (((Cyberhug))) as I'm sure that was hurtful, but WOW I love how the Lord moved through your daughters words. That is a memory that will follow you all the days of your life.

Exactly. I was actually really excited for her that she saw it. You want to hear something funny. On one end of the street we are too extreem because we talk about teaching our kids courtship and wearing dresses mostly. On the other end we are not Christian enough. My daughter hit it. I think it is all the resting on their own understanding. I do really appreciate the support though.

But I have weaved through all this actually I am really feeling The Lords hand on it and feeling like we are doing just fine.

I loved that she was able to call it cold at age 10. And I have to say even though our family does a lot of Bible study this came from the HOD Proverbs study and the understanding of applying it to a situation. So I am excited! It really was a good thing in the end.
