My son wants to plow through his emerging readers...??

 What to do? We just started the Emerging Reader schedule this week half way through the Beginner's Bible because I could not keep him from reading ahead. Today he picked up "Owl At Home" and read the first three stories. I told him to wait, but he REALLY wanted to read it. I am thrilled that he is wanting to gobble them up, but I don't want him to plow through them without doing the comprehension questions. Anyone else have this issue? I don't have access to an English library otherwise I would just go pick up some separate reading material for him...what to do? :?:

I may be wrong, but whenever my son wants to read on his own MORE, I say all the power to you son!!! Woo Hoo. However, he will read and then I'll ask the questions, then he'll read, then ask questions, etc...

At the very beginning the books were all very easy for him to read, so I didn't think it was wrong of me to allow him to keep reading. I just made sure he answered the questions as we went along. Stopping along the way.

We are at the Nature Guide and he isn't as thrilled with it, so we only do the daily amount of reading. I have a feeling once we get to Tornado he'll want to read more of it than required.

Would you be willing to accept our 2nd-hand readers if we can mail them to you? That way you can keep his HOD readers for "school" and use these for his new-found-love to read!

Hi Amey,

I am going to be using Beyond with two of my kids too! :D My kids are big readers too, so I was thinking of getting some of the Optional Emerging Reader books listed under each unit, in the back of the manual. Maybe that might be an option for you too????

HTH,
LeAnna :D

You might have to let him plow through one or two on his own, then reread them to you one section at a time. I would try to box up the rest until it is time for them... :D

Juliekay, that's so thoughtful of you! Unfortunately, you would have to pay a ridiculous amount in shipping and then we would have to pay a pricey tax to pick it up at the Post Office. That's Mexican mail for ya. But I do appreciate your sweet offer. 8) Maybe I will have to just let him read a couple and go back through them with the questions later  I don't want to stifle his excitement...but I don't have a lot of extra books lying around on his reading level. My Mom is coming in July when the baby comes, so maybe I can have her bring some new books for him then. Thanks for the advice ladies :D

Amey,

With my boys, I do set aside their school books, so they don't quickly plow through them. :D Otherwise, I'd be continually having to find new books for school rather than using what I'd planned (which gets very expensive). I also want my boys to understand that their books for school have a different purpose than their free-reading books. We read our books for school in little bite-sized pieces and dig into them more deeply, while their free-reading books are theirs to plow through as quickly as they desire. 8)

I agree it is wonderful that your son is excited about reading, however you'll find he'll be even more excited to see what happens next if he has to wait and come back the next day before reading the next section. Once my kiddos finish a book for school, then they get to have it up in their room for free-time reading. :D

Blessings,
Carrie
