Are you sure I don't need to do the textbook problems if I use Carrie's hands-on suggestions? There are so many problems in the textbook (2A) that it seems like these are an important part of the program. This is really, truly okay?

My son is just finishing Singapore 2B and we've never used a textbook yet.

We didn't use the textbooks for 2A/2B last year. We did make sure to do all of the HOD math activities with the workbooks. My ds is finishing 3A right now and has done super! Nope - you don't need the textbooks.

What is the difference between textbook / workbook?

Singapore has both a textbook and a workbook for each semester of math instruction - so for example, there is a 2A Textbook and a 2A Workbook, and there is a 2B Textbook and a 2B Workbook. The Textbooks are the teaching instruction part, and the the Workbooks are the independent student part. Carrie wrote hands-on plans in the HOD guides to do in place of the textbooks up through 2B - and they are wonderful. Once your dc hit 3A/3B, then they need to use both the Textbooks and the Workbooks (so a set of 4 books) because Carrie did not write lesson plans for those since at that point, hands-on should be phased out, and the Textbooks work just fine. Clear as mud?

Hope that made some sense!

Julie
