Another English Question

Post by gestep » Fri Mar 06, 2009 4:46 pm

I received my box yesterday ! I cleared my shelves and the books are all home :D I did not have any time last night to read through much though and hope to find time tonight to study everything and finish organizing. Anyway, I do have a point here. I looked quickly through the R&S English 2 and wondered if I should be doing English 3 for our soon to be 9 yo? She is almost finished with BJU 2 and seems to be retaining it well enough (our 7 yo is not, so I think she will need R&S, instead of BJU). Should I start 9yo with English 2 and move fast then on to 3 or is there enough review of English 2 in the 3rd grade book that we should skip 2, or just go at the 7 yo's pace and have them do it together? Neither one gets bored by doing easier work and I suppose the review would not hurt but I do want to make progress too. So what does everyone think? I can't wait to get started

Gina,

I'm only doing R&S 2 this year, so I don't think I'll be able to help you as much as some others here. I know that we had done Abeka's 2nd grade stuff prior to this year, and we started with R&S 2. While we had some very basic stuff like nouns and verbs, my ds is really learning a lot this year with lots of coverage of pronouns, helping verbs, different adjectives. We had not covered these things nearly this well before, so I feel like it's very worthwhile for us. Now, your dd may have had much more in BJU than we did. I think from what I've seen others say, that R&S 3 does review and then jumps into diagramming. I have no clue how much they review though. I do know that HOD only reccommends being done with R&S 6 by 8th grade, so you've got plenty of wiggle room, too.

I bet someone can help you who's done level 2 and 3.

I found the answer in the R&S 2 book description.

"Since English 3 is significantly more advanced than English 2, we recommend students in grades 2-4 to go through English 2 first. The English 2 text can be used to teach multiple students in grades 2-4 at the same time. If your students have previously used an advanced program such as ABeka Grammar, you may have them go into English 3 instead. "

So we will do R&S 2, we did 2 lessons last night and they LOVED it. Something about snuggling on the couch makes school wonderful for us, no matter what the subject. :D
