A question about half speed?

I hear some of you saying that you take things at half speed. I am wondering how exactly you do this? Do you do the left side of the page one day and then the right side the other day? Is there another way to do it?

That's exactly what I'm going to be doing when we start Beyond. I'm going to be doing the left side one day, the right side the next. I'm planning to have C read every day, even though it would just be scheduled for the right side of the plans. I'm also going to have her do the poem copy work on the left side day, when we read the poem, even though it'd be scheduled for our right side day, just so that she doesn't do all her writing in one day to spread the writing out a bit. We're doing this because she's so young. She's not quite 5 1/2 yet but has finished LHFHG and we're ready to start. I'm planning to speed her up to full speed 4 days a week, probably in September, but we'll just see how she's doing.

When we've gone half-speed, we've done the left side one day, and the right side the next day. We did that because everything on the left side of the plans coordinates with the history, and it's just neat to keep that all together. Another option is to just do school 4 days a week or so and do all of the plans - that stretches it out some. What are you thinking?

I haven't done half speed yet, but depending on how my daughter is doing at the end of LHFHG I may choose to go half speed with Beyond. She wasn't quite 5 when we started LHFHG and at the pace we are keeping she would be done all the guides by 7th grade. She seems plenty challenged by the work we are doing and I was thinking that I would start out doing Beyond a little slower since the work load is increased and she may not be quite ready for the amount of work that is required. Most likely we would alternate the sides each day, and maybe near the end we would do everything at once to get her ready for Bigger. She would then be doing 1st and 2nd grade with Beyond and be in 4th for Bigger.

Right now I'm thinking that maybe we will start half speed by doing the left side one day and the right side the next day. We'll likely do that throughout the summer and then move to full speed in the fall (but maybe just 4 days a week at that time... so faster then half speed but not quite full speed ahead). Although, if half speed seems to be working fantasticly, then we may continue that for the majority of LIttle Hands. I do want to make sure that she has at least the last 10-15 units or so at full speed though. That way she will be able to transition into the slightly bigger workload of Beyond... which we may also start at half speed. :D We'll just have to see how things go!

Laurie - You have a really good approach to this. I think your plan will allow for growth spurts and plateaus. You have time on your side - and this is a great way to use that to your advantage. :D I can't wait to hear about your first week! :D
