Dictation vs Spelling

I have a question about the philosophy behind Dictation vs Spelling. Carrie mentioned that she preferred Dictation over Spelling at older grades and I had personally not heard before that one can replace Spelling with Dictation. My son is at the young age of the manuals and he is a great speller, but it just makes me nervous to stop doing spelling with him since I had not heard of this replacement by dictation before. We are going into BHFHG in the fall. I plan to do the 2nd grade spelling list with him for now.
It would help me if someone could explain this to me.

Great question I would be interested too. We use Spelling Power and really like it. Thanks

Here is a past thread that my help you with this. I know the CM style does encourage dictation as a more natural approach to learning spelling, as the child is seeing the words in the context of a sentence. I'm sure others will chime in here as well.
