Notebooking in Beyond...

Okay, I am going through rounding up all my curriculum and supplies for this fall, and am wondering how many areas have notebooking in them. I am thinking of either doing what I have been doing with LHFHG, and putting the pages into a three ring binder with page protectors, but I am also thinking about notebooks from Miller Pads and Paper. So.... my question is, how many notebooks should I think about for Beyond? Also, what are you all using for Spelling words and Poetry? Correct me if I am wrong, but are the practice spelling words on 3 x 5 cards? Are you printing the final words in a notebook?
How about poetry? I would love to hear what you are doing!!

Thanks,
LeAnna :D

I also love the Miller pads. I like that they have the different grade level papers.
We are doing BLHFHG and this is what we do.

1. We use a "Miller's Picture Story Book" for the art projects and write part or the memory verse or another sentence on the lines and paste the art work on the back of the previous page. (Some adaptations must be made to the art projects or else the book gets to thick and you can not use food). Sometimes if it is 3-dimensional we change it or make something else like it to put in the book). We also did this for LHFHG.
2. For Spelling we use a "Miller's Blank Spelling Book" and have them write all the words in there on Day 4. Kind of like a test booklet only we don't call it that, don't want to stress them out at this age and they love the sticker they get once all is checked.
3. For Copy work of the Poem we use "Miller's Writing Journal" and you can always do the pictures that you have to draw on the back of the adjoining page that is blank.

For daily devotions we use a Primary journal (from Wal-Mart, we started this once he could read the "Early Readers Bible recommended in the Emergent Reader Program on his own after a few units into BLHFHG) and I have him copy the date, copy a sentence from the bible story he read and draw a picture right above it.Now this is brought to dc as Devotion Time, Prayer and Bible Reading on your own and it is done when he first gets up, we emphasize that this is not school, for future discipline in doing your devotions before doing anything else and journaling what the Lord speaks to your heart.
Next year I may get the "Miller Memory Journal" for Devotions.

The rest
1. Science, History Activities and Geography we make a sheet with the directions and we do the activity right on the page punch holes in it and put them under there section in a 3-ring binder. If don't have a written activity you can always take a picture of the experiment to add to that page later.
2. All the Spelling words from the whole year I wrote on index cards in a file box ready to go.
3. The Time-line stays on the wall.
4.The Memory verse I print off and put on the wall by the dinner table so Dad knows what we are working on.
5. For Grammar we make a sheet of the directions and have them do it right on the sheet and place it in the 3-ring binder of that section.
6. Narration sheets go into the binder as well.
7. I also keep the sentences that they come up with for spelling with the copy work they do in the binder. I only use the marker board on day 1, because the kids love to use.
8. Even the Math sheets with fun activities I sometimes keep, but you have the workbook so that's not as needed.

Now it all does take some extra time and planning and work. Since Carrie and Julie did it all for me, I figure I could do this, so that the kids have something structured to look at the end of the year and you can look back at how great a program this is, what they learned and how you little sweetheart progressed that year past. Also for evaluation and port-folio reviews its all organized.

If you have more kids coming into the program you have all the sheets saved on the computer and ready to just print out!

Hope this does not stress anyone out who does not have the time or energy or organization to do this!

Hmmmm...not sure if i can help, but this sounds like an organization question. We're in Bigger and because i pulled DD out of ps mid-year, I wasn't 100% sure on placement. So, for spelling, we are flying through the spelling units, so instead of writing them all down on index cards, we just do 2 spelling lists a day on a dry erase board. We'll be done with all the spelling in Bigger pretty soon, so I will have to come up with my own spelling to challenge her with. When we encounter a word she doesn't know, I correct the spelling, she writes it 5 times and then writes a sentence or two with the word (and all elements have to be correct - like punctuation, etc. At school she did some fun things that i will try to incorporate in the future with my own spelling lists like playing hangman, making your own word search game, etc.

We have 3 3-ring binders with dividers. In her History notebook she has a tab for vocabulary, timelines, notebooking. In her Lang Arts binder she has poetry, copywork, grammar and dictation. I believe i will add a tab for spelling when I get to the point that she will be writing more and studying the list longer. I guess I'm not as crazy about the index card idea. Science has it's own binder. I don't put things in page protectors because it's costly to protect every single page, and I haven't found it necessary. She is careful with her work.

Memory verses are on an index card with the reference at the top, and she looks it up and copies it on to the card. They are all hole-punched and put on a ring that hangs abover her desk. She comes up with fun hand motions and has had lots of fun memorizing even long passages. Once it's memorized she recites the verse to dad and they talk about the meaning.

Looking forward to reading more replies.

Thank you! I appreciate the ideas! What are you using for your timetimes? Also, are the kids drawing the pictures or symbols that go with significant dates. Or are there some that are using other resources for pictures, etc. What periods will I be needing for Beyond?

Thanks,
LeAnna :D

We did index cards for the spelling ahead of time too and put them in a recipe box. We made tabs in a 3 ring binder and use clear plastic sleeves to slide the papers into. Anything that doesn't fit in the sleeves, we 3 hole punch and put in the binder. We take pictures of the things that can't be saved or stored easily. For the timeline, we're doing the folder idea.

Oh, does Carrie have ideas in Beyond for inexpensive timelines and how to do them?

Yes, she does, LeAnna! She explains how to use one large sheet of white paper and fold it in half, making a grid of columns for the years studied. We've done that with both Beyond and Bigger, and really liked that dc could see it at a glance, all in one place. We'd bought an expensive timeline previously, and we did not like it as well. I like how each of our dc's timelines look different from one another's because they are not photocopied. Their timelines have really become "theirs". When you get your manual, the introduction says what materials you will need, and gives options for materials (i.e. index cards or notebook for spelling). You should be able to get everything you need for very little money at a Walmart-type store. HTH!

Julie :D

Well that's a good thing - Mike is a super-fast-shipper, so you shouldn't be long in waiting!

Would the supply list be pretty much the same for Bigger? These ideas are really good and I have our local homeschool fair coming up In April and would like to get my supplies there.

We get a huge package of them from Office Max - I think it's like 500 of them for $13 or so. Any type of Office store will probably have better deals than Walmart type places.
