Another question about the amount of writing in Preparing

Post by LynnH » Mon Feb 23, 2009 3:29 pm

I now have the guide in hand so I have a few more questions. My ds is the one with mild Cerebral Palsy. He can write short sentences, but tires easily and has difficulty with legibility. He can do some cursive and prefers it because his hand tremor isn't as much of a factor since you don't lift your hand to write. He types fairly well especially for his age. Here is my question. Which of the writing activities are the most important for him to actually write? I figure copying the bible verses in a Common book is something he could do and might enjoy looking back over to see how his writing is improving. For the dictation I had thought I might have him type it (with spell check turned off), because I would like him to learn how to eventually type notes if he is ever in a classroom situation again. He will want to draw the pictures in Draw and Write through history, but writing the words on unlined paper will be very hard so I was going to have him type those first at the top of the paper. I am not sure what I will do for the written narration portion, most likely see what he feels like doing on that day. He isn't one to take the easy way out and will do what is on the lesson plan if it is at all possible. Does this sound doable to you all? Will he lose out on anything by doing it this way?

Lynn,

I think that your plan for your little guy's written work sounds just right. I do think it would be fine for him to type his written narrations as well. A good goal would be for him to copy one thing in cursive each day. We do assign at least one copywork assignment in cursive daily. This is because copywork is important to cement correct spelling, mechanics, capitalization, and usage. Any other writing assigned throughout the day could definitely be typed. :D

Remember to do almost all of Rod and Staff orally or on a white board. We do this at our house, and it works beautifully. :D

For the poetry writing assignments, it would be a good idea for you to be his scribe. It is noted that way in the guide for the prewriting portions of the poetry writing sessions already. You may just want to take it one step further to write his actual poem or paragraph as he dictates it to you too. Otherwise, this could also be typed if you/or he prefers that instead. The goal of the poetry is to get the creative juices flowing. It isn't as much of an assignment to practice the formal act of writing.

The same is true for Drawn into the Heart of Reading. You could easily be his scribe on that too, as the goal is to dig in and discuss and analyze what was read. :D

It sounds like your son is a hard worker. What a wonderful quality for him to have!

Blessings,
Carrie

Carrie,
Thanks once again for answering my questions. As I poured over the guide last night I also figured I could be his scribe on several sections such as the Science and Poetry. I like the idea that he will have a goal of writing one thing in cursive a day. That way he knows exactly what is expected. This summer he wanted to work more on his cursive so we will be working through A Reason for Handwriting. That is the one he picked out because of the bible verses. That should then transition nicely into him writing in cursive some of the things in Preparing.

One cute story I wanted to pass along to you. I showed him the online guide for Preparing and went through each box with him. He was very excited and said "Thats what I want to do next year." I asked him why and the first thing out of his mouth was "It's Christ centered." He also then said he liked that it had activities to do and he liked the boxes. He is definately
a kid that likes to know exactly what his day will look like and what is expected of him so Preparing should fit him well.

Lynn,

What a precious son you have! It's amazing that he can already have an idea of what he likes and of what he's looking for in his day-to-day. What an excellent trait to have at a young age. :D

I pray Preparing will be a blessing to both of you!

Blessings,
Carrie
