Vocabulary in Preparing Hearts...

I noticed in the sample pages on Day 2 they do Vocabulary. The words are written on cards, definitions and a sentence. Are new words done each week on Day 2? Is there any other days for vocabulary? Do they review the words at later times?

New words are done on each Day 2. The dc do 3-5 words on cards. Finding the words within the context of the history selection has been good for our ds. He has learned to use the words in context around the vocabulary word to figure out its meaning.

I like this so much better than other vocabulary I'd done in the past. When vocabulary activities involve lots of words, each used in a sentence, and then none of those words have anything to do with one another - that is not the way we naturally will need to decipher new words.

Reading the whole history selection first, and then finding the words within that has helped my ds do that within his independent reading. I do not know what I was thinking those old kind of vocabulary activities would do for my ds :roll: . We also used to look words up in the dictionary, much in the same way as I described before - random words, writing various definitions, etc. I can look back now and see that did nothing but teach my ds how to look words up in the dictionary. With PHFHG, he is looking up words he wants and needs to understand better to dig deeper into the history he already read - now that is an activity with a purpose.

He knows the vocabulary words now, and review is not necessary. He links it to his history learning, and because of that, he remembers them. I think the way it is done in PHFHG is the way to go. His vocabulary is growing leaps and bounds, and the skills he's learned doing vocabulary this way have transferred into virtually every other subject area - even his independent free time reading. Oh, and vocabulary type questions are also part of the science questions, though not in the same way. So, that's been our experience! :D
