Poetry and Literature Questions

Post by butterfly113 » Tue Feb 17, 2009 10:02 am

As students study poetry in Preparing as well as upcoming levels of Hearts for Him Through TIme, will they just study various passages and discuss the meaning/mood/feelings of the poem? OR will they also study literature terms as alliteration, onomatopoeia imagery, similies etc....

As far as in Literature, will they study plot, character, settings, point of view, climax, resolution etc? Will it be done through HOD or DITHOR?

Thanks for any input!

We are just doing Beyond and DITHOR this year. The literary terms you mentioned and more are in both. When we are doing a storytime genre, dd is learning about the mood, characters, setting, etc. When we study our DITHOR genre, they are learning some of the same PLUS a huge focus on the moral character of the book/characters. There's some of that in Beyond as well, but DITHOR goes more in depth with it all. We discuss it in Beyond whereas in DITHOR we have discussion and assignments to go with it-- different kinds of story maps, activities, question/answer to analyze, learning to predict, isolating the problems from the story and thinking of possible solutions- deciding which solution is the best and predicting what the character might do, etc. A big difference between the two is that you read aloud the storytime books and they are reading for themselves in DITHOR...so it's different level books and using different skills...listening comp. and reading comp.

We haven't gotten far into the poetry study yet, so I can't help you there. :D

HTH a little!

Butterfly113,

Tamara did a great job of answering the question about DITHR. DITHR is a recommended part of the HOD programs. It is a necessary part of literature study and is the way we cover the story elements, higher level thinking, and reading with moral discernment through Godly character quality studies using the Bible. DITHR actually is HOD, as we've written it ourselves!

We also do cover all of the poetry elements you listed through our poetry study included within Bigger Hearts, and then many of these elements are reinforced again in Preparing Hearts. :D We will most likely be taking a break from the study of poetry elements within the new ancients guide and instead return to focusing on the enjoyment of poetry, along with using painting to express the poetry. We are still working out the specifics of the daily lesson content in the poetry portion of the ancients guide, so I can't be more specific than that at this point.

Blessings,
Carrie
