Spelling in Preparing Hearts... Help please

Post by butterfly113 » Sun Feb 15, 2009 4:21 pm

Can someone give me an explanation of how spelling is taught with Preparing? I know that there are dictation exercises, yet what about spelling rules and understanding spelling phonetically? Are there lists each week??? Any input would be great! Thanks

Hi there -

Spelling is taught using the dication method from CM which you can learn more about from this post

There are no rulesor word lists only dictation passages. Let us know if you have more questions once you read the thread!

butterfly113,

Here's a link to another thread that will really help with an explanation of where the dictation passages come from and how they're set up:

I just had to chime in on this thread. The reason is this. . .I have two horrible spellers! This is a frustration to me, as one to whom spelling always came easily. The irony is that I was very careful to teach my two to read with a strong phonics program. In addition, they both went through all the Explode the Code workbooks and began separate spelling workbooks at about the first grade level. It hasn't availed me much.

What has made a difference for my eldest is using the Apples workbooks for secondary students, combined with studied dictation. She is really enjoying the long, challenging dictation assignments in her high school unit study, Where Brook and River Meet. Having seen the difference it is making, I'm only too eager to dive into the dictation lessons in Preparing and just trust where they will lead. I believe now that dictation is what engages the mind to actively pay attention, far more than any workbook page can do.
