Phonics for my son

Post by Patience » Sat Feb 14, 2009 1:45 pm

Does anyone have a suggestion on a phonics program (maybe something like Phonics Pathways?) I can use with my son in addition Reading Made Easy? I am committed continuing with this, but I think both of us might benefit from something fresh. (I'm thinking something with very short lessons or small bits) We've had to back up and repeat several large chunks in the past..(could have been avoided I'm sure if I was more careful about reviewing trouble spots) We've just had to back up again and this mama is fighting with herself to persevere. Overall, he is doing well, but he is not as strong as I'd like. Another idea I had was to take a break from RME and use the Pathway Readers I have. I admit that maybe I need a break more than my son does  Or maybe you should just tell me to persevere...or better yet....tell me to take a break. :D

My ds had just hit a brick wall and was going no where with his phonics. He could read many 3 letter (CVC words) but blending was not smooth. That was 3 days ago. I got on Starfall.com and did the first 4 or 5 lessons with him over two days and WHOA! He is reading words like "clock, ball, grass, dress, fall" along with just about any 3 letter CVC word. My husband had him reading words with him and ds sounded out words like American Bulldog, King Kong, and almost read Dodge. (dh just told him the "dge" makes a j sound and he got it!). It worked so well that I've decided to fisish up a few more Starfall lessons then get him started on Click N Kids. If you are interested in CnK, enter in my email address in the promotional code spot and get $10 off. It's already very reasonably priced and you can pay over 3 months. (hmschooling @ cox . net) I loved Phonics Pathways but I suppose every kid is different and sometimes that fresh new approach is just what they need!

I'm thinking that I may take a break from RME and try the Pathway Reader that I have here at the house. Anyone use those?

I just finished First Steps with my first grader (seven years old, will be eight in October). Now we've started Days Go By. We both enjoy them. He sits in my lap and reads most of it. I'll read a paragraph here or there, at his request. We are doing The Reading Lesson as well. We've also done parts of Phonics Pathways and parts of Turbo Reader. Of those three, he likes The Reading Lesson best, but probably because there's still a novelty of newness. Phonics Pathways was definitely his least favorite. He also enjoys using starfall.com on the computer.

With my oldest, I've had the Pathway readers available to her, but she's always used them for free reading. I need to buy fifth through eighth grade of those yet. She really enjoys them.
