Any thoughts on Winston Grammar to use for a child that does not like writing and who is not very auditory.
We are using Abeka Grammar this year, but next year the R&S might be too much writing for him and maybe too dry for his learning style.

Not sure about Winston Grammar, but we're planning on doing R & S 4 half-speed next year, with a good portion done orally and on marker board. That may be an option you could consider. I think it is really a solid grammar program, and I love that it is Christian.

You know your child best, so will of course have to base your decision on his abilities...but we have really been pleased with R&S. My dd 9 just started in level 2 at the beginning of the year (at age 8 ) and she is doing wonderfully. I also love that it brings in Christian principles...and she's learning so much. You might be able to do it with your child at half-pace if you think that's needed. I'm sorry, I have no experience with Winston Grammar either.

Thank you for your input. I may even wait a year since he will only be 7 and allow him to mature a bit before jumping into full force grammar and he may just do fine.

I have no experience with Winston Grammar, *but* I did R&S 2 with my 7 year old this year, and it has been great. The lessons are short, and we do them all orally b/c he was just not ready for the amount of writing required. I really recommend it!

I've been planning for years to do Winston Grammar with my oldest in 7th and 8th grade, but HOD introduced me to R&S and I've been very pleased. As others have mentioned we do quite a bit orally, use a white board and he does select writing assignments. The lessons are efficient and very effective. I feel like we're making real headway on the grammar issue. There is ample review, concepts are solidifying and the teacher's guide is wonderful. I started my 6th grade son in R&S 4 this year. Our goal has now changed from Winston Rod and Staff and to complete R&S 5 in 7th grade and R&S 6 in 8th grade. If yo haven't had a chance to look over the text with the teacher's book I would highly recommend it. It really is a very well done material.

I will take a look at the teacher manual for R&S. If it works orally than that would be the way to go for us in the beginning. I thought there was much writing required. I get so much encouragement on using the things Carrie recommends for curriculum. I am so glad that you ladies are so excited about it, it gets me going!

I'm new to HOD and I've never used Rod & Staff. We do use a similar type textbook for English, though. I was so please to see in the Preparing manual that Carrie recommends doing the English lessons orally and/or on the white board. While looking through my new manual this week, I was amazed at how much writing is incorporated throughout. Now I won't feel pressured to make my son do all his English work written out, because I'm confident he'll be writing enough each week for other assignments. I'm sure it's like that in the younger levels of HOD as well.

I'm so glad you've been encouraged - I come to the board for encouragement daily. When you get the R & S manual, it does have quite a bit of writing, but most ladies don't do it like that. I actually posted how we go about doing R & S 3 this year on another thread, so I thought I'd link it here, just if by chance anything in it might be helpful:
