Singapore Question

Post by Patience » Tue Feb 10, 2009 8:01 pm

Do you work the "practice problems" in the textbooks with the kids or do they do these on their own with you by their side if they need help? On days where they have those practice problems, do they also do workbook problems?

It really depends on what we're covering. Last week my dd grasped what we were doing right away and once we started doing the workbooks she told that she "got it" and that she could do it on her own. So I let her and she did just fine with only one error all week. That was not the first time I let her do the work on her own, I'm sure that as she grasps concepts she will want some freedom to do the work on her own. That is probably good, because I have a bad habit of rushing through the work rather than letting her figure it out for herself.

I'm not sure if my question is clear, but are you saying that sometimes if your child understands the textbook lesson, that you skip the section in the TEXTBOOK that could be labeled "Practice Problems A" and just move on to the workbook?

We start the textbook problems together on marker board. Once he shows he's getting it well (which is sometimes right away and sometimes not), I'll copy the problems on the marker board for him and just have him work them with me by his side. If it's a long textbook assignment, I make sure he can do some of each type of problem well and then do not always require him to do it all - though he usually does and it goes fairly quickly. On textbook days that he totally gets it right away, I just let him do it independently then, and may only assign a portion. I look at the Textbook as my teaching time with him, and then the workbook is done independently. If I am going to assign a grade or percentage, I do it for his workbook. The HOD pacing for Singapore is well planned out in chunks, so be sure to check out that plan in either the daily plans of the HOD guide you're using or its Appendix. HTH!
