My son is technically in 6th grade, but reads at a higher level. Is DITHOR suitable for this age group, and does it work well with more challenging reading (for example, ds is reading Lord of the Rings). Does it incorporate both discussion and writing about literature? I'm concerned it might be "too easy" for him at this age/level.

I haven't seen the program yet, and only just today peeked at the sample pages. Insight from users would be appreciated.

It sounds like you've got a great reader on your hands. That's great! Based on what I've seen Carrie reccommend with others, I would think that DITHOR (using the 6/7/8 student book) would work well for you. I think she even said that her oldest has been studying the Lord of the Rings books this year and will do DITHOR next year again.

I'm just getting started with DITHOR with my 8 yo this year. I think it's wonderful!! He's my oldest, so we haven't made it to the higher levels yet, but there are many moms who use it with their older kids. I love the discussion that we have about the books and the story elements that we're learning about, but hands-down my favorite part is the way it is teaching my son to look at things through a "Biblical lens". We discuss character qualities within each genre and evaluate the characters based on how the Bible says we should live (and check to see if we're living that way, too). This is how I want my son to learn to think when looking at everything in life - a Biblical worldview!

Ok, I just looked at your question again. I didn't answer the part about writing. DITHOR is very strong on the discussion part, and the story elements and character analysis are covered in the student workbook, which I believe they do daily at that level. But, it's not a "writing" program. Heart of Dakota covers writing in their guides...and this is the reading program. I'm quite sure that Carrie reccommends Igniting Your Writing to fill that gap if you're not covering it in some other way. It's sold here on the website, too.
