When to start the next program?

Post by yayadaisy » Mon Feb 02, 2009 11:37 am

So we started off doing BLHFHG this fall and stopped for a few weeks. Ended up putting the kids in PS for three months and now we have started with BLHFHG again and are loving it so much! My question is at the end of the year in May or early June, we will still not be done with BLHFHG we will probably be around unit 23-24 (I am expecting to take about two weeks off when baby is born in April) So would it be to confusing to just go to bigger in the fall with the kids? That is what i was planning on doing. I will be doing reading and math through the summer, but found trying to do much more than that really burns us all out to much. Where we live you have to enjoy summer while you have it, winter is way to long here!!!! I really don't want to skip anything in BLHFHG, but also don't want to start a new program during the school year. We will always be behind in my mind if we did that. I know others start at all times of the year, but for us following the regular school schedule works out well with the activites we are in. So again would it confuse them to much the miss the last 10 units or so , and then just start with bigger in the fall?

Honestly, I would probably start the next year with Beyond and then start Bigger when you finish Beyond, but I don't think it will hurt them to not finish the last 10 units. You'll be covering that time period (albeit with a different focus, from what I understand) in Bigger so they're going to get the information. If it would make you feel behind to finish out Beyond then that's what I do. But if you really wanted to finish Beyond you could because there aren't any grade levels attached to it. As long as you were doing their level in math and language arts then you're fine. But I think either way would work. I'm sure someone more experienced with this will be along to help you though.
Momma to my 4 sweeties:
DD 14 - MTMM and DITHOR (completed LHFHG, Beyond, Bigger, Preparing, CTC, took a couple years off, and now she's back!)
DS 11 and DD 9 - Preparing(completed 2 rounds of LHTH, LHFHG, Beyond, and Bigger)
DD 6 - LHFHG

The programs build off each other so I would not suggest skipping the last 10 units. We will not complete our programs by June. We will stop whereever we are and then pick it up again in the fall. Then we will move into the Beyond and Preparing. My daughter will actually move into Beyond before my son moves into Preparing. But it will all work out in the end.

Sheila,

I'd wait until you get closer to the end of this school year to see where you're at and where your children are at skill-wise. :D Normally, we'd suggest you go from one guide to the next, but you've had an interesting year and so may have a special situation.

If your kiddos are on track to do Bigger and would be held back by finishing Beyond, then you could just read the history readings to finish out Beyond and move into Bigger at the start of the next school year. If, however, your kiddos will not be held back in their learning by finishing Beyond, we would recommend that as the first option.

Blessings,
Carrie
