LHFHG Placement

My dd will be 6 in Sept. and will be starting K. I wanted to do LHTH this current school year that we are in, but instead, because of time constraints and $ have opted just to use some little workbooks I had around the house and read to her. She also joins in with her brother in Bible, Apologia Astronomy ( a little over her head, but she loves to do it with her daddy and brother), and some read-alouds (when she is interested) that we are reading with her brother. She is more immature than her older brother and sister were at that age, that is why we decided to start K later. Also, she does love workbook-type activities, as well as being read to, art, music. She also cherishes alone time with either mom or dad. She can write her uppercase letters, although I have not formally taught her handwriting. She also knows her letters and sounds but cannot blend them yet. Do you think that she would fit okay into LHFHG? (Also she knows her numbers up to 20 and can count up to 20 very well, but cannot write her numbers yet.) Do you think it would be over her head? I do see that you can use it for first grade as well, that is why I asked this. Would the Singapore Recommendations be over her head or would she need to start in the Earlybird K 1a and 1b first? Those are my questions. I'm praying about it but I would also like to have my older kids do a program in HOD together next year, possibly Preparing. Do you find it hard to implement two programs at once, especially with a 6th grader that would be using extensions? Thanks!

Your DD sounds like a great fit for LHFHG. I would recommend the Singapore Early K 1A and 1B because even though she can count (my son could too)- She probably doesn't know place valve, groups of 10's, writing and recognizing number up to 20, the concept of 1/2, 1/4...
We are on week 16 of LHFHG, and at first the math was easy for my DS... but I am glad I started with K 1A.
I would recommend the 1st grade thinking skills book, instead of the Rod and Staff workbooks.
The great part of HOD is you can use any reading program she is ready for.
Hope this helps. I am NO expert, as this is my 1st year homeschooling and using HOD.

I agree with Lisa - I think your dd sounds like a perfect match for LHFHG! I also agree with the comments Lisa's math suggestion and Thinking Skills idea. A Reason for Handwriting K will teach her the lowercase letters too, and either phonics program is wonderful (though you can use any phonics program with LHFHG). I have been doing several HOD programs for years (this year we're doing BLHFHG and PHFHG along with DITHOR). It is completely doable. The extension pack of PHFHG is meant to be independent, so take a look at those titles to see if your child doing the extension can do it independently. I am going to link you to the schedules' post, since it shows some different schedules for doing 2 (or more) HOD programs at once:

We are about halfway done with PHFHG and having a fantastic year! We also finished LHFHG about a month ago, and therefore about a month into BLHFHG - loving that too! Proper placement is important - I think your dd sounds right on track doing LHFHG - but take a look at the placement chart to place your older dc too, just to be sure:

Have a great weekend!

It will be fun to hear about your dd starting LHFHG! It always takes me about 2-4 weeks to get into the swing of our school day, so if you're anything like me, about a month in you'll be skipping along happily!
In Christ,
Julie

playschool,
Lisa and my3sons did a great job of helping you talk through your options. I agree that it's sounding like LHFHG would be a good fit, but check the placement chart that my3son's linked just to be sure.
I also think that just starting with the Earlybird Math 2A/2B as scheduled in LHFHG would be good. It provides a solid foundation in all basic math skills and is a great place to begin.
If the content of LHFHG seems a bit much at first that is alright. It takes kiddos a bit to "grow into" a new program. You could always slow it to half-speed if your little one's attention span isn't quite long enough for a full day in the beginning.
We also do several HOD programs at our house. This year we are piloting much of our new ancient guide with my oldest son, doing Preparing Hearts with my second son, LHFHG with my third son, and have our 2 year old in the mix. You can see my schedule on the link that my3son's posted. So, it is very do-able!
Blessings,
Carrie
