Is is okay to start LHFHG with my ds who is 5. We held him back from K this year and now we are going to home school. I was doing LHTH but I think he is ready for more. I was planning on just doing one page per day so it was take a while to finish it anyways. What are your thoughts? I was thinking of starting this in the next few weeks with him. He hasn't gone thorugh the whole LHTH yet and doesn't know all the letters and sounds but seems to get it when we do a letter and is ready for more formal work. I think? I would probably go very slowly with The Reading Lessons and just see how it goes.

Sheila,
You may want to check out the placement chart, which is available elsewhere on this site, to determine what is appropiate for your ds. That said, our family is using LHFHG now and it is a very rich curriculum; you may want to complete LHTH regardless, to ensure a firm educational foundation. You may want to check-out the Before the Code workbooks, we used them before doing LHFHG so that I could be sure my dd had a good grasp of letters and their sounds before starting with a reading program. You check these books out at CBD.com.
Blessings,
Nancy

I'm using LHFHG with my 5, and we didn't finish LHTH with him, either! I think if he's picking up the letters and their sounds easily it shouldn't be difficult to transition him into the next book.

the one thing my 5 struggles with is handwriting-so we don't stress that as much yet. His fine motor skill just isn't ready for the task. However, his large motor skill is in love with the rhymes!

Sheila,
Since your son is 5, you could really go either way. You could finish LHTH or go on to starting LHFHG at half-speed. Whenever I am pondering decisions like that I look at the rest of my day and what I will have going on. It looks like you will have your hands full this upcoming year with 5 little ones and one on the way. So, with that in mind, I would recommend finishing LHTH and just adding in a phonics program and possibly a handwriting workbook like "A Reason for Writing 'K'. This will keep your time spent with your 5 year old at a manageable level and also give him time to grow up a little more before heading in LHFHG.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the memories my kiddos have made with me as we've done LHTH. I have always wished I could have done it with my oldest son too. We didn't have it written at that time though!

The Bible learning and enjoyable activities in LHTH give the kiddos such a good foundation for further learning in LHFHG too.
You know best, but I think either option will be a good learning experience for your little sweetie, so you can't make a mistake!
Blessings,
Carrie

Thank you. I think we are going to try LHFHG for a few weeks at half speed with doing phonic daily and see where it leads.
