We are just starting this with my 5.5 year old...we just got 'tie' shoes a few weeks ago. We started in K with my dd and now this ds...we did not do it with oldest 'til 2nd grade and I think (for him) that was way too late. He is still extremely SLOW with it! Anyway, as for how? For now, I'm having him get them on his feet, then I have him watch me tie them. I have had him practice the first part...my plan is to have him do each step until he masters it, and so on until he can do it by himself.

This is going to be a hard thing for me to teach my daughter. She is left-handed and both her dad and I are right-handed. I know that to show her would require I teach every step mirror image to how I am used to doing it. That will be tough. I am planning on starting her next year with learning when she is in K.

I taught this with preschool to my first four. They all had one of those dress up dolls that have buttons, snaps and tying shoes. My youngest two taught themselves. I actually did nothing to help them both just learned on their own. For the others I think those little dolls and a cardboard shoe with laces helped. Preschool to K seems like the time to start to me.
