Singapore Math Question...

Post by funkmomma71 » Wed Dec 17, 2008 5:24 am

I was looking at the Singapore Math website and it said that it would be replacing the Kindergarten Level of math with the new "Standards" math. The scope and sequence is different from the books I have now so will that mean when I order new books for ds in a couple of years they won't match-up with the scope and sequence of LHFHG? :? If so, I will want to order books for ds when I order next year's program for dd.

I talked to Carrie about this, and I believe they are planning on putting out an updated LHFHG manual sometime next year that will reflect a change from Singapore US edition to the Singapore Standards edition. If you have the current manual, you might want to order us US edition now while it's still available. You can get it directly from HOD, also from CBD and Rainbow Resource.

I forgot to mention that Carrie said although they will be updating LHFHG to use the Standards edition, they will continue to use the US edition for all other guides as the Standards edition is much more expensive, more "workbooky", contains more review and practice, and does not retain as much of the flavor that made Singapore different from other US math programs.

Nancy,

The ladies did a terrific job of answering your questions. I'll just add that as of now Singapore is no longer selling the Earlybird Kindergarten Math, so the supplies we (and other retailers) have right now is all there is of this particular product. Once they're gone, they're gone. We will have enough to cover our current LHFHG stock. After that we'll have to reprint the LHFHG guides to update the math plans for the new Kindergarten Standards Edition. :D I'm just saying that if you want the Earlybird Kindergarten Math, you may want to make plans to purchase it within the next couple of months.

Blessings,
Carrie

Thank-you for this information, I will get right on purchasing what I will need for my ds, because I really like the way it flows as it is written now. And, of course I wouldn't want to have to buy a whole new guide just for the math.

Edited to add: I ordered the Kindergarten Math books from Rainbow Resource, I didn't want to disrupt your supply of books to guides.

Thanks again for taking the time to answer my question.

Nancy,

Thank you for posting this question (and thank you Carrie for your informative response), I must be living under a rock because I had no idea how the Singapore Math changes/updates would eventually affect the current LHFHG guide.
Like you, since I already have the LHFHG guide, I went ahead and ordered the Singapore Math EB U.S. (just ordered tonight) Editions so that they match up with my LHFHG guide. I plan to use LHFHG and Singapore Math with my young daughter in the future. She is only 1.5 right now, but hey, it is good to plan for tomorrow right?! :D

Yes, I noticed that they were changing that too. It's too bad, because I really love the Earlybird Kindergarten 2A/2B books. I was recommending them to a friend who uses another program for her Kindergartener, and I couldn't find them. Since I wanted to use them with my ds when he does LHFHG, I went ahead and ordered them when I ordered the 1A/1B Textbooks and Workbooks. Thanks Carrie for taking care of this for all of us!

Planners after my own heart! :D I do love the Earlybird U.S. Edition of the math and wish they hadn't changed it, but we'll adjust to the new Standards Edition and it will be fine (just quite a bit more workbook pages and quite a bit higher priced). Bigger doesn't always mean better, sometimes it's just more of the same but bigger! In the U.S. we seem to feel the need to "supersize" everything.

I'm still trying to decide if I'm going to be REALLY insane and buy it for my third dd. Do you think it would be too much to buy for a child that's not even born yet?

Yeah, well, call me crazy too! My ds is only 15 months-old! But I want to make sure I also have the best for him. :D

Absolutely not  I'm buying ahead for my 2 year old cause I love the early bird books as they are (were  ). I believe in planning so much that I will plan and plan and plan and never DO if I'm not careful.

I'm stumped on what to do about this.....

I am getting ready to buy LHFHG within a few months (starting in May) with the K level books for my oldest. I've got several little ones up and coming (3 so far) with whom I plan to use this curriculum. So what is the best route? Order the guide now with 4 sets of EarlyBird math, or wait for the reprint and use the new workbooks? What if the reprint is not available by the time I'm ready to start? I can't imagine it being that big of a deal. The math workbooks are not an essential part of the program, right? Optional connection.

SO maybe the question is, do I want to buy that many EB EarlyBird books ahead of time. What is the real advantage? How will this change effect the rest of the Singapore schedule? I have no idea what Singapore is like, I was just going to use it based on HOD's suggestion.

Thanks for any advice.
