One more book question re: Beyond

Post by annaz » Thu Jan 24, 2008 5:53 pm

1) Are the Emergent Readers scheduled in the Beyond's Teacher's Manual or are they part of the "Reading Made Easy" guide, and

2) can you use those readers with another Phonics Program or would it make sense not to have them.

Thanks,
Ann

They are scheduled in the Appendix of Beyond. I think you could use them and another phonics program. I am currently using First Reader & ETC for Phonics with Little Hearts. I will continue w/ them next year with Beyond if my dd needs them. I also plan on getting some of the books from the emerging readers schedule as well. I hope that makes sense.

Hi Ann,

1-the Emergent Readers are scheduled in the Beyond guide (as they also are in the Bigger guide)

2-I think using the Emergent Readers assumes your child is done with phonics programs and needs time to "grow" into a truly independent reader. The daily schedule lists how much of each book to read, and the student should be reading the daily portion aloud to you. Then there are 3 brief discussion questions for your child to answer orally. My 8 yo (who just finished a phonics program last school year) is using the Emergent Readers and a simple, one-page-a-day phonics workbook just to brush up on the finer points (which is working well for her).

Hope that helps. :D

Thanks...that's helpful as well. Because if I don't have a schedule, we are less apt to practice our reading, so this is a good thing. She's more a stubborn reader, but is able.

The ladies on the board do such a great job of popping in to answer questions, don't they! :)

I just wanted to add that the Emerging Reader Set is a 14-book set designed to be used in the order mapped out in the Appendix of "Beyond..." and/or "Bigger..." once you have completed most of your phonics instruction. It begins with approximately early to mid second grade books and gradually progresses up through mid-third grade books. It is a 170 day schedule.

Blessings,
Carrie

Thank you ladies!!! I really like that the books move along, by getting progressively harder and I don't mean short a, long a type... I mean the entire book and I think that is a good challenge. None of the other curriculums I've used have done this, except when you "change grades". But kids learn so much more all year.

Thanks.
