Now that Reading Made Easy is over...

We are about to finish Reading Made Easy...what a blessing that has been for my son. This is our first year homeschooling (WHICH I LOVE LOVE LOVE) and he is a 1st grader. He started the year reading as an average kindergardener...he easily is reading on a 2nd grade level right now I'd say.
We are currently doing Little Hearts for His Glory so there is no spelling or reading comprehension. So, until we jump to Bigger is there any outside curriculum you would suggest now that we are finishing RME? I wasn't sure if we should do some type of spelling program, or should we do some type of reading comprehension program? We still currently do Explode the Code books and he is on Level 3.
Thanks for any and all suggestions!!!

Hi Tiffanieh!
My son, also a first grader, finished RME a few weeks ago and we dove right into the emerging reader books recommended in Beyond. He is doing quite well!
Are you close to finishing LHFHG? I would not recommend going into a different curriculum if you are planning on continuing with Beyond, once you complete LHFHG. The emerging reader set is scheduled in the appendix of Beyond, so even if you are still using LHFHG you can begin those books.
Good luck!

Thank you for replying however I guess my wording was wrong. I didn't mean a new curriculum because we most definitely do not want to leave HOD ever

but I wasn't sure what program should replace RME in the phonics box of LHFHG?
What exactly is the emerging readers program like? Do they read the books and then have to answer comprehension questions? He's reading between level 2-3 depending on the publishing house. Some level 2 are way too easy and then you have others that are more accurate.
Will I need to buy the beyond book plus readers and then when we actually get to beyond we'll just be past this portion in the book?
Sorry for all the questions and my confusion! I appreciate all your replys!!!

Carrie has scheduled the emerging readers very nicely.
You will have to purchase Beyond guide and the emrging reader books (unless you can find them at your library). But it will not affect your schedule when you fully begin Beyond.
In the appendix of Beyond she has scheduled each book and comprehension questions, and the books are so much fun for the children to read! there are also optional books listed for each week - but you will have to make up your own questions!
I believe that emerging reader means that the child is ready to read on his own, beginning with a little help and then moving on to reading independently.
OK, hope I answered all you questions. It really makes sense once the books are in front of you. If you were close by I would invite you over to check them out!

If you go here:
http://www.heartofdakota.com/emerging-reader.php
You will see what the emerging readers consist of. There are comprehension questions for each reading based on Bloom's Taxonomy. After your child finishes the Emerging Reader section, they would move on to Drawn Into the Heart of Reading at Level 2.
Hope that helps.

Tiffinae,
The ladies have done a great job of helping you with your question. I'll just pop-in to agree that once your child finishes Reading Made Easy, she's ready to head right into the Emerging Reader's Set. You'll simply follow the Emerging Reader's Schedule in the back of the Beyond guide (which lasts for one year) while you are continuing on with Little Hearts for His Glory. We puposefully chose not to put the Emerging Reader's Schedule within the daily plans of Beyond so that you can begin it at any time, whenever your little one finishes phonics.
Within the Emerging Reader Set, you have your choice of Bibles. The Early Reader's Bible is easier and has a more controlled vocabulary, sticking more to words the kiddos will have already had within the phonics time. The Beginner's Bible is a little harder, with a less controlled vocabulary. The Bible is used as the first scheduled book in the Emerging Reader's Schedule.
If you need to economize, you can find many of the Emerging Reader books at a good library. If finances permit, we have loved owning the Emerging Reader Set. If you have other questions, ask away.
What a joy that your little honey is reading so well. I love the Emerging Reader's stage of reading!
Blessings,
Carrie
