My ds's trouble with writing on lines...

has gotten so much better! He wrote without seeing the lines as "stopping points", and he also wrote without spaces. Even when I tried to point out where to stop, and how to use his finger width for a space between words, it still just all ran together for him.
This is what helped him. I used a yellow marker to hi-light the top and bottom lines, and I used a pink marker to show spacing between words.
Here he didn't need the yellow anymore.
And now, he doesn't need the pink spacing either - though he still likes me to do it for some reason.
I thought this could maybe help someone else who might be having trouble with their dc "seeing" the lines and spaces in writing.
In Christ,
Julie

This is a GREAT tip! One that I can use this week! Thanks so much for sharing such a good visualization of a way to teach this. This is one area where I need to be more vigilant with my 6 year old!
Blessings,
Carrie

I'm glad to hear my little one isn't the only one who struggled with this - thanks, ladies!

Oh this is a great way to help my son too! Was this your 6 year old or 9 year old? The only reason I ask is because my 9 year old still writes like the first pic you put up. I am also curious if you put the pink spacings on the paper before he does the page or do you do it while he writes? Sorry to be so dense but I am a perfectionist and details help me tremendously
I also am having a tough time trying to decide what size lines to buy for my son. Should I get him 1inch lines, 3/4 inch lines etc.? He's been doing Cheerful Cursive so maybe I should stick with that size line? Don't know what to do on that
Thanks so much for the tip!

Thanks, Paige! This was my 6 yo - but we've been working on it now for a bit this way. I should have posted a beginning picture of his writing - but I couldn't find one. I sit near him and add the pink space in after each word. I think you could do the same sized lines he's been doing in Cheerful Cursive, since he's used to that already. I'm a details gal too - HTH!

Julie

What a great idea! My 5 yo really doesn't see the lines well, so we got her some paper with raised lines. That's helped a lot. I like the highlighter idea though. I'll keep that in mind for if she's still having trouble next year!

Cool idea! I'll have to file this away for when my little guy gets bigger.

What a great visual from Julie. I am going to also incorporate this with ds7.
Thank you Julie, I am glad I re-visited this post!
