A Kind and Gentle Reminder about Copyright

Hi all,

I know there are quite few folks who visit the HOD message board who are new to homeschooling. I simply wanted to remind everyone that it is illegal to make photocopies of the guides for personal use, sharing with friends or selling. Yes, the author does give permission to photo-copy the activity sheets in the guides, but that's it! Why , you might ask am I reminding you of this? I'm so glad you asked. :) I recently purchased from a former HOD user a LHTH guide that had reportedly had the spine removed, three hole punched and put into a binder. I was eager for any cost savings because I had several items I wanted to purchase, so I purchased the binder. It arrived this week and the pages in the binder are all photocopies of the original! I am still a little stunned. The amount of money I paid was not insignificant. Furthermore, the seller has not responded to my email asking for a refund. Now I'm out my money and I still don't have a LIttle Hands to Heaven Guide that I can use. :( So, the point of this story is - if you've begun to "fudge" the law a little to "help out at home." STOP. Be aware that what you are doing is illegal and costs us all in the long run.

Well, that's my morning wake up call!

With Joy!
Florence

Addendum - It appears I may be in error. It has come to my attention that the lesson plans in the manuals do not have colored symbols (like the downloads) and that they are bound photo-copies. My mistake. I only wish I knew for sure, as I've still not heard one way or the other from the seller. :? I didn't want to change the content of my original message, because I still think it is good for everyone to be reminded about the importance of honoring copyright laws.

Wow, that's terrible. I can't believe that someone would try to pass a copy on to another user for a profit. I hope that you can report them to the administrators of the website/forum that you purchased it from so others can be warned about this person.

Wow that is horrible. The guides are so cheap in and of themselves brand new. The price of copying it all would be so expensive. What is the point? Not to mention that it is an odd place one puts themselves in my breaking copyrite laws on a Christian materials.

I do think sometimes publishers are ridiculous. I have one Bible study that will not allow me to make copies of the activities within my family and there are really just a few. So we just skip the activities and it is a good lesson, we decided as a family this would be the best way to follow the law but still afford to use it. But really HOD is more than fair with their rules especially for DITHR, why not just go with it?

Thanks for sharing and sorry this happened to you!

It is amazing to me how some people have no remorse over doing something so underhanded. Argh! I am so sorry that happened to you.

I see someone has the posted on Vegsource. 3 ring binder and holed punched? I hope this person isn't still selling this.

????

I am very careful and was surprised when we had a family over from church last week and they mentioned how they "burned" the movies their kids like from the library.
I was very bothered by this. My husband called me a prude. :)

You are NOTa prude! I would never consider "burning" movies from a rental or even worse a loner from the library. It is theft, plain and simple, It never ceases to amaze me when people will make unauthorized copies but would never think of "stealing" from a store.
