After Singapore

HI again,

I was able to find a thread on the board where Carrie mentioned her oldest son is working in Teaching Textbooks, but have any more comments or thoughts been made as to what math HOD recommends after Singapore? And what is the highest level of Singapore that HOD recommends?

It is looking more and more like we will be recommending Singapore Math through 4A/4B for sure. Once kiddos get to Singapore 5A/5B, we will most likely be offering a choice of Singapore 5A/5B or Teaching Textbooks 6. These two levels will be similar in content. We will not be recommending Singapore 6A/6B, as it requires too much of the parent to decipher, because it uses a rods and bars system for introducing Algebraic formulas rather than using x and y. So, at that point it is looking like we will be recommending Teaching Textbooks 7 as the sole option. Teaching Textbooks is expensive and we realize that may make it prohibitive to some families, but the good news is that HOD will easily work with any math option you choose. If you've used Singapore Math in the younger years, your child will be well situated for pretty much any math program out there. So, you can always choose another option if you prefer.

I'm familiar with Teaching Textbooks and when you get a grade level ahead it is an incredible program! My dd can't wait to start it. I let her do some of the sample lessons for level 5 and she begged to do more! She's good at math and I consider her to be advanced...I know TT has gotten a reputation of not being rigorous enough, but like carrie has said before, that is remedied by going up a level. My dh is in college right now and TT would have prepared him for his college algebra and calculus/trig classes wonderfully. It doesn't cover all the same topics as many other programs, but it DOES cover the ones they NEED to know in depth along with some extras and has a lot of real life application/word problems.

Excellent choice Carrie! I'm very comfortable with the grade levels you have recommended for both Singapore and TT .

Thank you for the heads-up. We did a sample of Teaching Textbooks last year and my son loved it, but we decided to go with Singapore, because I couldn't get enough solid reviews on TT. I personally, really like the material and learned a lot from the little bit I did

I know there have been some questions, especially on the WTM board about whether Teaching Textbooks is rigorous enough, but for those who feel that might be true, the problem can easily be solved by using a higher level of TT from the grade your child is in. We have personally loved Teaching Textbooks and have found it a wonderful teaching tool with very solid presentation, practical life application, and excellent review. We are also very blessed to have the child move toward more independence in math, after we've laid a very solid foundation first with plenty of time spent teaching it during the younger years! While we do think Teaching Textbooks is a good option from Teaching Textbooks 6 on up, we would hesitate to recommend it to younger kiddos who we feel still need the extra supervision required by a parent working with them on their math prior to Teaching Textbooks 6.
