Hi,

I am planning on using Preparing Hearts with my 10 year old daughter. She is dyslexic and we are currently using Barton Reading and Spelling as her only language arts program.

I am wondering if I should go ahead and order Drawn into the Heart of Reading? I think the readers may be too difficult for her at this stage but I also don't want to wait too long to introduce this.

Can I wait another year or should we definatley start it now?

The beauty of Drawn In the Heart of Reading is that you can choose whatever books best fit your daughter. You aren't limited to the reading list suggestions. My kids (my 10 year old is also dyslexic and using Preparing this year--he loves it--I bet your dd will too ) just go the library and pick out a book on their level in whatever genre we are doing--the worksheets and activities in DITHOR can be used with any book. I also wanted to mention that if your daughter's dyslexia interferes with her writing, feel free to modify the graphic organizers in Drawn into the Heart... and the writing assignments in Preparing Hearts to avoid frustration. You may also want to check out the placement chart to be sure that Preparing Hearts is the right placement for her overall. If you'd be willing to share a bit more about your daughter's reading, writing, and ability to discuss and answer questions along with how she does as far as listening to grade level read-alouds, we could help advise you better.
