A bit OT..Lewis & Clark, Sacajawea costumes...

Okay, this is a bit off topic, but I thought since it's history-related I might get some great ideas here! We have the opportunity to attend an 'alternative' to Halloween party at the church we attend. We can go without dressing up; in fact, I thought they would not allow that. However, I found out we
can dress up as explorers. I was trying to think of ideas for my three children, and was having a hard time thinking of who my dd could be. Then it hit me...Lewis and Clark had Sacajawea to help lead them...so she was an 'explorer' too!

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has any idea what I could use to dress them up as these characters. What kind of pants, shirts, boots did L & C wear...and what would S have worn? I am not a sewer, but my mom will be in town and might be able to do some for me...I just thought this sounded like so much fun! Any thoughts are greatly appreciated...even places where I could buy this type of thing (inexpensively) would be great. Thanks!
Okay, just got back from church, and found out it can be pilgrims, too. Still, ideas for types of things to wear or that I can use to make outfits would be great.

Here is a picture of Lewis and Clark.
http://faculty.nwacc.edu/abrown/Western ... -clark.jpg Since they have on buckskin coats, you can use tan colored felt (no edge finishing or hems needed) to make simple open in the front or pull-over-the-head jackets. Just have your kids lay down and trace around them on paper. Then add several inches extra for the width of they body and sew around the edge. Leave some extra to cut fringe on the sleeves. Clear as mud?

Another option might be tan or brown colored pillow cases, with arm and neck holes cut out. Just add a brown belt and maybe a shoulder bag. You can also do a simple Indian dress the same way with felt, cutting a V neck opening and fringing the bottom. Maybe add a coonskin cap for the men and a simple headband and maybe a bead necklace, and there ya go! Hope you all have a great time.

InHisTiming,
I thought of you when I received the new Vision Forum Catalog as they had a variety of costume type things.
You might want to check out their website for more ideas!

Thank you, ladies! I have my mom coming into town...and she has offered to sew their outfits. I just have to find the right look. I also found out we can do pilgrims or pioneers, so I'm searching for pictures of these, as well. Any more ideas are certainly welcome, too.
