OK, I think I have next year planned for my SN son!

I know I'm nuts for working so hard to get this straight, especially since we're not going to start school until next July. We have a LOT happening in the next few months, so knowing that next year is planned and settled really helps me. :)

I'm going to use the LHTH with him and my K4er. But for my son's K5 year, I'm going to also use some "right side" activities from LHFHG (R&S books, A Reason for Handwriting, and I'm going to go ahead and give Singapore math a try--if it doesn't work out, no biggie as we can try something different or skip math and just prepare for a more formal math program for Grade 1. The other math programs I'm looking into are Right Start, BJU, and Developmental Math).

I decided to find a phonics program but I don't see him fitting into either of the ones listed, and I really just want to expose him to phonics because our most important thing to do is get him to understand letters and their sounds (and if I'm correct, LHTH will do this). I've heard several talk about SSRW containing a lot of writing, so we decided against that and may use it for 1st grade, depending on how he does. After speaking with his OTR, she just doesn't see his fine motor skills improving rapidly enough to handle lots of writing. But she thinks the Reason for Handwriting will give him just enough practice.

So we're going to give Hooked on Phonics-K a try for a phonics program and I may incorporate Happy Phonics as well, depending on if he gets it for Christmas from Grandma and Grandpa.

It's a big relief to already have this taken care of. I had a big credit at B&N, so I went ahead and picked up HOP-K today and think it's going to really help get him exposed to some beginning phonics.

YEAH..., What a great plan. Doesn't that feel good :D  I think you sound very balanced and HOD will help you to be able to stay that way. One of my favorite parts of HOD is that I can be just as excited 16 weeks in, as I am at the very beginning. I started other programs full of excitement but this is the first time I still feel that way 10 mos down the road! :D AWESOME

So glad you got the best plan for you figured out. It is always a relief to me to know where I am headed and exactly how I will get there. Congratulations! :D

Yes it does help a lot. I'm going to be so busy over the next few months and don't see anything slowing down until April and then it's time to order as that's when our homeschool convention is and I'll need to buy a few bits and pieces.

What a good feeling! Your plan sounds great, and your perseverance about choosing a good fit will be well worth it. :D I hope you enjoy LHTH as much as we did. It took so much pressure off of me as I was so worried about my ds who had speech problems learning to read. LHTH really helped him be confident about it. I think you'll be so happy with your decision!

In Christ,
Julie :D
