Will you share your favorite read-a-louds and their genre's? If you don't know the genre will you list it and we can help each other figure it out (and if all else fails Carrie and Julie will help us, LOL )

Toliver's Secret was my FAVORITE this year. We adored this book. (Adventure)

Right now we are reading "The Tale Of Despereaux" Awesome BOOK! (Fiction)

Mary are you wanting to know our favorites of the read alouds that Carrie has written into the program as read alouds or are you wanting other things we read to our children and that is why you want the genres? I am trying to get a grip on what I am supposed to report. I'm confused help me girlie.

Hi Brenda, Good Question! I am looking for the books you use for "Story Time". I bought the list that HOD sells and it has some WONDERFUL suggestions. I also see some great idea's in the back of my manuel. However, I would love to know what you found to be your favs! It can be any book. One on Carrie's list or just an old favorite that fits one of the genre's

Ok I gotcha now. So I will just first say that I have found her picks are always the best, she just has that knack and everything we have done of hers has been great. But also I know sometimes people want to fit things that they might have on their shelf or may have done some of them and need different picks so I will try to think of ones that are not hers that we have done and are great. I'll add to this as I think of more but some that come to mind are...

If Animals Could Talk by Gitt. This is one that would be Fantasy but it is in the terms of an autobiography of each animal represented. So you might be able to stretch it into biography just like Ben and Me is really but it would be of the animals. It could work for either I think. It has a wonderful creation world view and all the animals talk to the point of why God created them the way he did. It is great for older kids and maybe kids from LHFHG on would be good. But it actually gets really in depth and they learn a lot of science along the way. This is a great book for teaching to the theory of evolution from the truth of creation as long as you are OK with talking animals but these do not humanize themselves as much as their voice it to talk to the glory of God who created them.

Another that comes to mind is Adam and His Kin by Beechick. This one has a few spots in the end that are graphic so you want to be aware of that. I would put it in Historical Fiction. We really enjoyed reading this as well.

I am thinking about the others we have done and trying to categorize them because they are mostly character type things I am not sure where things like The Millers would go for sure but they are good and other things are Bible related so let me think on it and I will add later. It is hard to categorize things sometimes isn't it.

Ok adding now the Holling C. Holling books are great and the CLP Nature Readers are also good for Non-Fiction and we have also enjoyed the Edgar and Ingri D’aulaire books not sure if those would all be Folk Tales or not but we loved those.

I think the book that we all enjoyed the most last year was The Great Turkey Walk.

We absolutely LOVED Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'dell. Our library has it on audio, and I'm seriously considering getting it to listen to again.

We also have enjoyed The Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis. The Bronze Bow( made me tear up many times, because I can't imagine what it would have been like to live and walk the earth when Jesus did!) is really good, as is The Golden Goblet.... We're also in the midst of reading the American Adventure series by Harbour Publishing.

Well- I have no idea about genre for the most part...
but I had to chime in on this thread as I LOVE books...
I haven't used enough of HOD to say that I read these books for storytime- we are using Carrie's suggestions... but these are books we have really enjoyed.
