We are really enjoying these books scheduled in Little Hearts. I was just wondering if anyone has used any of the the "big" ones such as Burgess Bird Book, Seashore Book, or the Burgess Animal Book?? I was thinking about adding one for extra read-aloud...we go through read-aloud pretty fast around here.

Now, we aren't doing Little Hearts right now. But we love the Seashore Book! It is such a wonderful book! I plan on getting the Bird and Animal books too.

So what I am hearing you say is that the Seashore one might go great with One Small Square in the Seashore and the Animal one might go great with One Small square in the woods? So I really need to buy these
Somehow that is what I hear. Hehehe!
Hey I see that the Bird and the Animal books are available on the Baldwin project to view for free, no Seashore though.

Hi Melanie!
I got a dog-eared, well-loved-on, copy of the Bird one at a library sale, and it is beautiful (inside... not the falling off cover)! I think the connections already suggested would be great. I've got to remember to pull that out then! Thanks for the suggestion!

W2W...yes, if that's what you're hearing then I'm hearing it too!
The big question is....can I wait that long
Julie, I printed off the first chapter of the animal book at the Baldwin site and read it last night. It's really is good....oh, I don't know if I'll be able to wait...
Maybe I should do the bird one and then save the other two. I think I'll print off the first chapter of that one too....
I think I need a diet DP...

It fits in with our trip to the beach to look at the tide pools after we finish the One Square of the Seashore and give my little guys a taste as well. I honestly think all my kids are going to love it. Ok that is my justification for, order placed it is on the way!
But we really are planing to take a drive to the beach to investigate what we learn so...hehehe! But I did at least find the animal one and the bird one online for free if we want to link it to One Small Square in the Woods!

Just wanted to ask what genre does the Burgess Seashore Book fall into? Would it be Fantasy? I am going to plug it into our story time I think.
I think even my big guys would like it and maybe that is one we can all do together.
Thanks!

That is a really good question...fantasy with all the talking animals, yet non-fiction with all of the accurate scientific information...hmmm
BTW...we're going to start one too, the Bird book. I'm going to save the other two and follow your advice for using them with Bigger.
We're going to make a bird notebook. I got the idea from someone on here that said their dd made an animal notebook and added different animals to it as they studied them. I wish I could remember who it was...Tansy I think? We're (hopefully) going to start ch. 1 on Friday.

A notebook sounds like a great idea. And the bird one would be fun because no matter where you live you could have live specimens to look at. Let me know if you get any great ideas maybe I will do that later with my littler two. We have lots of different kinds of birds around here. They would have great fun. We get a robin building her nest and raising her babies nest in our front yard. Let me know how that goes for you guys. It sounds like fun. Maybe we will do that later!
So do you think I could go either then? Or is it really all that accurate. I am really trying to get the hang of figuring out the genres I get stumped on things like this.
Thanks for your help!!!!

LOL..I'm still trying to get the hang of it, too! Last month, we decided we wanted to re-read My Father's Dragon....I was doing just like you....couldn't decide. I was just getting ready to post my question, and we lost the book! I am a total neat freak Olive and we still to this day cannot find that book!
I'll let you know how the notebook goes. We have lots of birds here in MO and we get a fair amount of migrating ones.
